The Gospel of Matthew
Chapter 27

MATTHEW
Chapter 27

1 When morning came,
all the chief priests and the
elders of the people took
counsel against Jesus to
put him to death;
2 and they bound him and
led him away and delivered
him to Pilate the governor.

3 When Judas, his
betrayer, saw that he was
condemned, he repented
and brought back the thirty
pieces of silver to the chief
priests and the elders,
4 saying, "I have sinned in
betraying innocent blood."
They said, "What is that to
us? See to it yourself."
5 And throwing down the
pieces of silver in the
temple, he departed; and he
went and hanged himself.
6 But the chief priests,
taking the pieces of silver,
said, "It is not lawful to put
them into the treasury,
since they are blood
money."
7 So they took counsel,
and bought with them the
potter's field, to bury
strangers in.
8 Therefore that field has
been called the Field of
Blood to this day.
9 Then was fulfilled what
had been spoken by the
prophet Jeremiah, saying,
"And they took the thirty
pieces of silver, the price of
him on whom a price had
been set by some of the
sons of Israel,
10 and they gave them for
the potter's field, as the
Lord directed me."

11 Now Jesus stood
before the governor; and
the governor asked him,
"Are you the King of the
Jews?" Jesus said, "You
have said so."
12 But when he was
accused by the chief priests
and elders, he made no
answer.
13 Then Pilate said to him,
"Do you not hear how
many things they testify
against you?"
14 But he gave him no
answer, not even to a
single charge; so that the
governor wondered
greatly.

15 Now at the feast the
governor was accustomed
to release for the crowd
any one prisoner whom
they wanted.
16 And they had then a
notorious prisoner, called
Barabbas.
17 So when they had
gathered, Pilate said to
them, "Whom do you want
me to release for you,
Barabbas or Jesus who is
called Christ?"
18 For he knew that it was
out of envy that they had
delivered him up.
19 Besides, while he was
sitting on the judgment
seat, his wife sent word to
him, "Have nothing to do
with that righteous man,
for I have suffered much
over him today in a
dream."
20 Now the chief priests
and the elders persuaded
the people to ask for
Barabbas and destroy
Jesus.
21 The governor again
said to them, "Which of the
two do you want me to
release for you?" And they
said, "Barabbas."
22 Pilate said to them,
"Then what shall I do with
Jesus who is called Christ?"
They all said, "Let him be
crucified."
23 And he said, "Why,
what evil has he done?"
But they shouted all the
more, "Let him be
crucified."
24 So when Pilate saw
that he was gaining
nothing, but rather that a
riot was beginning, he took
water and washed his
hands before the crowd,
saying, "I am innocent of
this man's blood; see to it
yourselves."
25 And all the people
answered, "His blood be on
us and on our children!"
26 Then he released for
them Barabbas, and having
scourged Jesus, delivered
him to be crucified.

27 Then the soldiers of the
governor took Jesus into
the praetorium, and they
gathered the whole
battalion before him.
28 And they stripped him
and put a scarlet robe upon
him,
29 and plaiting a crown of
thorns they put it on his
head, and put a reed in his
right hand. And kneeling
before him they mocked
him, saying, "Hail, King of
the Jews!"
30 And they spat upon
him, and took the reed and
struck him on the head.
31 And when they had
mocked him, they stripped
him of the robe, and put his
own clothes on him, and
led him away to crucify
him.

32 As they went out, they
came upon a man of
Cyrene, Simon by name;
this man they compelled to
carry his cross.

33 And when they came
to a place called Golgotha
(which means the place of
a skull),
34 they offered him wine
to drink, mingled with gall;
but when he tasted it, he
would not drink it.
35 And when they had
crucified him, they divided
his garments among them
by casting lots;
36 then they sat down and
kept watch over him there.
37 And over his head they
put the charge against him,
which read, "This is Jesus
the King of the Jews."
38 Then two robbers were
crucified with him, one on
the right and one on the
left.
39 And those who passed
by derided him, wagging
their heads
40 and saying, "You who
would destroy the temple
and build it in three days,
save yourself! If you are
the Son of God, come
down from the cross."
41 So also the chief
priests, with the scribes and
elders, mocked him,
saying,
42 "He saved others; he
cannot save himself. He is
the King of Israel; let him
come down now from the
cross, and we will believe
in him.
43 He trusts in God; let
God deliver him now, if he
desires him; for he said, 'I
am the Son of God.'"
44 And the robbers who
were crucified with him
also reviled him in the same
way.

45 Now from the sixth
hour there was darkness
over all the land until the
ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth
hour Jesus cried with a
loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lama
sabachthani?" that is, "My
God, my God, why hast
thou forsaken me?"

57 When it was evening,
there came a rich man from
Arimathea, named Joseph,
who also was a disciple of
Jesus.
58 He went to Pilate and
asked for the body of
Jesus. Then Pilate ordered
it to be given to him.
59 And Joseph took the
body, and wrapped it in a
clean linen shroud,
60 and laid it in his own
new tomb, which he had
hewn in the rock; and he
rolled a great stone to the
door of the tomb, and
departed.
61 Mary Magdalene and
the other Mary were there,
sitting opposite the
sepulchre.

62 Next day, that is, after
the day of Preparation, the
chief priests and the
Pharisees gathered before
Pilate

63 and said, "Sir, we
remember how that
impostor said, while he was
still alive, 'After three days
I will rise again.'
64 Therefore order the
sepulchre to be made
secure until the third day,
lest his disciples go and
steal him away, and tell the
people, 'He has risen from
the dead,' and the last
fraud will be worse than
the first."
65 Pilate said to them,
"You have a guard of
soldiers; go, make it as
secure as you can."
66 So they went and made
the sepulchre secure by
sealing the stone and
setting a guard.

MARK

Mark 15:1 And as soon
as it was morning the chief
priests, with the elders and
scribes, and the whole
council held a consultation;
and they bound Jesus and
led him away and delivered
him to Pilate.

Mark 15:2 And Pilate
asked him, "Are you the
King of the Jews?" And he
answered him, "You have
said so."
Mark 15:3 And the chief
priests accused him of
many things.
Mark 15:4 And Pilate
again asked him, "Have
you no answer to make?
See how many charges
they bring against you."
Mark 15:5 But Jesus made
no further answer, so that
Pilate wondered.

Mark 15:6 Now at the
feast he used to release for
them one prisoner for
whom they asked.
Mark 15:7 And among the
rebels in prison, who had
committed murder in the
insurrection, there was a
man called Barabbas.
Mark 15:8 And the crowd
came up and began to ask
Pilate to do as he was wont
to do for them.
Mark 15:9 And he
answered them, "Do you
want me to release for you
the King of the Jews?"
Mark 15:10 For he
perceived that it was out of
envy that the chief priests
had delivered him up.
Mark 15:11 But the chief
priests stirred up the crowd
to have him release for
them Barabbas instead.
Mark 15:12 And Pilate
again said to them, "Then
what shall I do with the
man whom you call the
King of the Jews?"
Mark 15:13 And they
cried out again, "Crucify
him."
Mark 15:14 And Pilate
said to them, "Why, what
evil has he done?" But they
shouted all the more,
"Crucify him."
Mark 15:15 So Pilate,
wishing to satisfy the
crowd, released for them
Barabbas; and having
scourged Jesus, he
delivered him to be
crucified.

Mark 15:16 And the
soldiers led him away
inside the palace (that is,
the praetorium); and they
called together the whole
battalion.
Mark 15:17 And they
clothed him in a purple
cloak, and plaiting a crown
of thorns they put it on
him.
Mark 15:18 And they
began to salute him, "Hail,
King of the Jews!"
Mark 15:19 And they
struck his head with a reed,
and spat upon him, and
they knelt down in homage
to him.
Mark 15:20 And when
they had mocked him, they
stripped him of the purple
cloak, and put his own
clothes on him. And they
led him out to crucify him.

Mark 15:21 And they
compelled a passer-by,
Simon of Cyrene, who was
coming in from the
country, the father of
Alexander and Rufus, to
carry his cross.

Mark 15:22 And they
brought him to the place
called Golgotha (which
means the place of a skull).
Mark 15:23 And they
offered him wine mingled
with myrrh; but he did not
take it.
Mark 15:24 And they
crucified him, and divided
his garments among them,
casting lots for them, to
decide what each should
take.
Mark 15:25 And it was the
third hour, when they
crucified him.
Mark 15:26 And the
inscription of the charge
against him read, "The
King of the Jews."
Mark 15:27 And with him
they crucified two robbers,
one on his right and one on
his left.
Mark 15:28
Mark 15:29 And those
who passed by derided
him, wagging their heads,
and saying, "Aha! You
who would destroy the
temple and build it in three
days,
Mark 15:30 save yourself,
and come down from the
cross!"
Mark 15:31 So also the
chief priests mocked him to
one another with the
scribes, saying, "He saved
others; he cannot save
himself.
Mark 15:32 Let the Christ,
the King of Israel, come
down now from the cross,
that we may see and
believe." Those who were
crucified with him also
reviled him.

Mark 15:33 And when
the sixth hour had come,
there was darkness over
the whole land until the
ninth hour.
Mark 15:34 And at the
ninth hour Jesus cried with
a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi,
lama sabachthani?" which
means, "My God, my God,
why hast thou forsaken
me?"
Mark 15:35 And some of
the bystanders hearing it
said, "Behold, he is calling
Elijah."
Mark 15:36 And one ran
and, filling a sponge full of
vinegar, put it on a reed
and gave it to him to drink,
saying, "Wait, let us see
whether Elijah will come to
take him down."
Mark 15:37 And Jesus
uttered a loud cry, and
breathed his last.
Mark 15:38 And the
curtain of the temple was
torn in two, from top to
bottom.
Mark 15:39 And when the
centurion, who stood
facing him, saw that he
thus breathed his last, he
said, "Truly this man was
the Son of God!"
Mark 15:40 There were
also women looking on
from afar, among whom
were Mary Magdalene, and
Mary the mother of James
the younger and of Joses,
and Salome,
Mark 15:41 who, when he
was in Galilee, followed
him, and ministered to him;
and also many other
women who came up with
him to Jerusalem.

Mark 15:42 And when
evening had come, since it
was the day of Preparation,
that is, the day before the
sabbath,
Mark 15:43 Joseph of
Arimathea, a respected
member of the council,
who was also himself
looking for the kingdom of
God, took courage and
went to Pilate, and asked
for the body of Jesus.
Mark 15:44 And Pilate
wondered if he were
already dead; and
summoning the centurion,
he asked him whether he
was already dead.
Mark 15:45 And when he
learned from the centurion
that he was dead, he
granted the body to Joseph.
Mark 15:46 And he
bought a linen shroud, and
taking him down, wrapped
him in the linen shroud, and
laid him in a tomb which
had been hewn out of the
rock; and he rolled a stone
against the door of the
tomb.
Mark 15:47 Mary
Magdalene and Mary the
mother of Joses saw where
he was laid.

Mark 15:42 And when
evening had come, since it
was the day of Preparation,
that is, the day before the
sabbath,

LUKE

Luke 22:66 When day
came, the assembly of the
elders of the people
gathered together, both
chief priests and scribes;
and they led him away to
their council, and they said,

Acts 1:16 "Brethren, the
scripture had to be fulfilled,
which the Holy Spirit
spoke beforehand by the
mouth of David,
concerning Judas who was
guide to those who
arrested Jesus.
Acts 1:17 For he was
numbered among us, and
was allotted his share in
this ministry.
Acts 1:18 (Now this man
bought a field with the
reward of his wickedness;
and falling headlong he
burst open in the middle
and all his bowels gushed
out.
Acts 1:19 And it became
known to all the inhabitants
of Jerusalem, so that the
field was called in their
language Akeldama, that is,
Field of Blood.)
Acts 1:20 For it is written
in the book of Psalms, 'Let
his habitation become
desolate, and let there be
no one to live in it'; and
'His office let another
take.'

Luke 23:2 And they began
to accuse him, saying, "We
found this man perverting
our nation, and forbidding
us to give tribute to
Caesar, and saying that he
himself is Christ a king."
Luke 23:3 And Pilate
asked him, "Are you the
King of the Jews?" And he
answered him, "You have
said so."

Luke 23:18 But they all
cried out together, "Away
with this man, and release
to us Barabbas"
Luke 23:19 a man who
had been thrown into
prison for an insurrection
started in the city, and for
murder.
Luke 23:20 Pilate
addressed them once more,
desiring to release Jesus;
Luke 23:21 but they
shouted out, "Crucify,
crucify him!"
Luke 23:22 A third time
he said to them, "Why,
what evil has he done? I
have found in him no crime
deserving death; I will
therefore chastise him and
release him."
Luke 23:23 But they were
urgent, demanding with
loud cries that he should be
crucified. And their voices
prevailed.
Luke 23:24 So Pilate gave
sentence that their demand
should be granted.
Luke 23:25 He released
the man who had been
thrown into prison for
insurrection and murder,
whom they asked for; but
Jesus he delivered up to
their will.

Luke 23:26 And as they
led him away, they seized
one Simon of Cyrene, who
was coming in from the
country, and laid on him
the cross, to carry it behind
Jesus.

Luke 23:33 And when
they came to the place
which is called The Skull,
there they crucified him,
and the criminals, one on
the right and one on the
left.
Luke 23:34 And Jesus
said, "Father, forgive them;
for they know not what
they do." And they cast
lots to divide his garments.
Luke 23:35 And the
people stood by, watching;
but the rulers scoffed at
him, saying, "He saved
others; let him save
himself, if he is the Christ
of God, his Chosen One!"
Luke 23:36 The soldiers
also mocked him, coming
up and offering him
vinegar,
Luke 23:37 and saying, "If
you are the King of the
Jews, save yourself!"
Luke 23:38 There was
also an inscription over
him, "This is the King of
the Jews."
Luke 23:39 One of the
criminals who were hanged
railed at him, saying, "Are
you not the Christ? Save
yourself and us!"
Luke 23:40 But the other
rebuked him, saying, "Do
you not fear God, since
you are under the same
sentence of condemnation?
Luke 23:41 And we
indeed justly; for we are
receiving the due reward of
our deeds; but this man has
done nothing wrong."
Luke 23:42 And he said,
"Jesus, remember me when
you come into your
kingdom."
Luke 23:43 And he said to
him, "Truly, I say to you,
today you will be with me
in Paradise."

Luke 23:44 It was now
about the sixth hour, and
there was darkness over
the whole land until the
ninth hour,
Luke 23:45 while the
sun's light failed; and the
curtain of the temple was
torn in two.
Luke 23:46 Then Jesus,
crying with a loud voice,
said, "Father, into thy
hands I commit my spirit!"
And having said this he
breathed his last.
Luke 23:47 Now when the
centurion saw what had
taken place, he praised
God, and said, "Certainly
this man was innocent!"
Luke 23:48 And all the
multitudes who assembled
to see the sight, when they
saw what had taken place,
returned home beating their
breasts.
Luke 23:49 And all his
acquaintances and the
women who had followed
him from Galilee stood at a
distance and saw these
things.

Luke 23:50 Now there
was a man named Joseph
from the Jewish town of
Arimathea. He was a
member of the council, a
good and righteous man,
Luke 23:51 who had not
consented to their purpose
and deed, and he was
looking for the kingdom of
God.
Luke 23:52 This man went
to Pilate and asked for the
body of Jesus.
Luke 23:53 Then he took
it down and wrapped it in a
linen shroud, and laid him
in a rock-hewn tomb,
where no one had ever yet
been laid.
Luke 23:54 It was the day
of Preparation, and the
sabbath was beginning.
Luke 23:55 The women
who had come with him
from Galilee followed, and
saw the tomb, and how his
body was laid;
Luke 23:56 then they
returned, and prepared
spices and ointments. On
the sabbath they rested
according to the
commandment.

Luke 23:54 It was the day
of Preparation, and the
sabbath was beginning.
