The Gospel of Matthew
Chapter 13

MATTHEW
Chapter 13

1 That same day Jesus
went out of the house and
sat beside the sea.
2 And great crowds
gathered about him, so that
he got into a boat and sat
there; and the whole crowd
stood on the beach.
3 And he told them many
things in parables, saying:
"A sower went out to sow.
4 And as he sowed, some
seeds fell along the path,
and the birds came and
devoured them.
5 Other seeds fell on rocky
ground, where they had not
much soil, and immediately
they sprang up, since they
had no depth of soil,
6 but when the sun rose
they were scorched; and
since they had no root they
withered away.
7 Other seeds fell upon
thorns, and the thorns grew
up and choked them.
8 Other seeds fell on good
soil and brought forth
grain, some a hundredfold,
some sixty, some thirty.
9 He who has ears, let him
hear."
10 Then the disciples came
and said to him, "Why do
you speak to them in
parables?"
11 And he answered them,
"To you it has been given
to know the secrets of the
kingdom of heaven, but to
them it has not been given.
12 For to him who has will
more be given, and he will
have abundance; but from
him who has not, even
what he has will be taken
away.
13 This is why I speak to
them in parables, because
seeing they do not see, and
hearing they do not hear,
nor do they understand.
14 With them indeed is
fulfilled the prophecy of
Isaiah which says: 'You
shall indeed hear but never
understand, and you shall
indeed see but never
perceive.
15 For this people's heart
has grown dull, and their
ears are heavy of hearing,
and their eyes they have
closed, lest they should
perceive with their eyes,
and hear with their ears,
and understand with their
heart, and turn for me to
heal them.'

16 But blessed are your
eyes, for they see, and your
ears, for they hear.
17 Truly, I say to you,
many prophets and
righteous men longed to
see what you see, and did
not see it, and to hear what
you hear, and did not hear
it.

18 "Hear then the parable
of the sower.
19 When any one hears
the word of the kingdom
and does not understand it,
the evil one comes and
snatches away what is
sown in his heart; this is
what was sown along the
path.
20 As for what was sown
on rocky ground, this is he
who hears the word and
immediately receives it
with joy;
21 yet he has no root in
himself, but endures for a
while, and when tribulation
or persecution arises on
account of the word,
immediately he falls away.
22 As for what was sown
among thorns, this is he
who hears the word, but
the cares of the world and
the delight in riches choke
the word, and it proves
unfruitful.
23 As for what was sown
on good soil, this is he who
hears the word and
understands it; he indeed
bears fruit, and yields, in
one case a hundredfold, in
another sixty, and in
another thirty."

24 Another parable he
put before them, saying,
"The kingdom of heaven
may be compared to a man
who sowed good seed in
his field;
25 but while men were
sleeping, his enemy came
and sowed weeds among
the wheat, and went away.
26 So when the plants
came up and bore grain,
then the weeds appeared
also.
27 And the servants of the
householder came and said
to him, 'Sir, did you not
sow good seed in your
field? How then has it
weeds?'
28 He said to them, 'An
enemy has done this.' The
servants said to him, 'Then
do you want us to go and
gather them?'
29 But he said, 'No; lest in
gathering the weeds you
root up the wheat along
with them.
30 Let both grow together
until the harvest; and at
harvest time I will tell the
reapers, Gather the weeds
first and bind them in
bundles to be burned, but
gather the wheat into my
barn.'"

31 Another parable he put
before them, saying, "The
kingdom of heaven is like a
grain of mustard seed
which a man took and
sowed in his field;
32 it is the smallest of all
seeds, but when it has
grown it is the greatest of
shrubs and becomes a tree,
so that the birds of the air
come and make nests in its
branches."

33 He told them another
parable. "The kingdom of
heaven is like leaven which
a woman took and hid in
three measures of flour, till
it was all leavened."

34 All this Jesus said to
the crowds in parables;
indeed he said nothing to
them without a parable.

35 This was to fulfil what
was spoken by the prophet:
"I will open my mouth in
parables, I will utter what
has been hidden since the
foundation of the world."

36 Then he left the crowds
and went into the house.
And his disciples came to
him, saying, "Explain to us
the parable of the weeds of
the field."
37 He answered, "He who
sows the good seed is the
Son of man;
38 the field is the world,
and the good seed means
the sons of the kingdom;
the weeds are the sons of
the evil one,
39 and the enemy who
sowed them is the devil;
the harvest is the close of
the age, and the reapers are
angels.
40 Just as the weeds are
gathered and burned with
fire, so will it be at the
close of the age.
41 The Son of man will
send his angels, and they
will gather out of his
kingdom all causes of sin
and all evildoers,
42 and throw them into
the furnace of fire; there
men will weep and gnash
their teeth.
43 Then the righteous will
shine like the sun in the
kingdom of their Father.
He who has ears, let him
hear.
44 "The kingdom of
heaven is like treasure
hidden in a field, which a
man found and covered up;
then in his joy he goes and
sells all that he has and
buys that field.
45 "Again, the kingdom of
heaven is like a merchant in
search of fine pearls,
46 who, on finding one
pearl of great value, went
and sold all that he had and
bought it.
47 "Again, the kingdom of
heaven is like a net which
was thrown into the sea
and gathered fish of every
kind;
48 when it was full, men
drew it ashore and sat
down and sorted the good
into vessels but threw away
the bad.
49 So it will be at the
close of the age. The
angels will come out and
separate the evil from the
righteous,
50 and throw them into
the furnace of fire; there
men will weep and gnash
their teeth.
51 "Have you understood
all this?" They said to him,
"Yes."
52 And he said to them,
"Therefore every scribe
who has been trained for
the kingdom of heaven is
like a householder who
brings out of his treasure
what is new and what is
old."
53 And when Jesus had
finished these parables, he
went away from there,

54 and coming to his own
country he taught them in
their synagogue, so that
they were astonished, and
said, "Where did this man
get this wisdom and these
mighty works?
55 Is not this the
carpenter's son? Is not his
mother called Mary? And
are not his brothers James
and Joseph and Simon and
Judas?
56 And are not all his
sisters with us? Where then
did this man get all this?"
57 And they took offense
at him. But Jesus said to
them, "A prophet is not
without honor except in his
own country and in his
own house."
58 And he did not do
many mighty works there,
because of their unbelief.

MARK

Mark 4:1 Again he began
to teach beside the sea.
And a very large crowd
gathered about him, so that
he got into a boat and sat
in it on the sea; and the
whole crowd was beside
the sea on the land.
Mark 4:2 And he taught
them many things in
parables, and in his
teaching he said to them:
Mark 4:3 "Listen! A sower
went out to sow.
Mark 4:4 And as he
sowed, some seed fell
along the path, and the
birds came and devoured it.
Mark 4:5 Other seed fell
on rocky ground, where it
had not much soil, and
immediately it sprang up,
since it had no depth of
soil;
Mark 4:6 and when the
sun rose it was scorched,
and since it had no root it
withered away.
Mark 4:7 Other seed fell
among thorns and the
thorns grew up and choked
it, and it yielded no grain.
Mark 4:8 And other seeds
fell into good soil and
brought forth grain,
growing up and increasing
and yielding thirtyfold and
sixtyfold and a
hundredfold."
Mark 4:9 And he said, "He
who has ears to hear, let
him hear."
Mark 4:10 And when he
was alone, those who were
about him with the twelve
asked him concerning the
parables.
Mark 4:11 And he said to
them, "To you has been
given the secret of the
kingdom of God, but for
those outside everything is
in parables;
Mark 4:12 so that they
may indeed see but not
perceive, and may indeed
hear but not understand;
lest they should turn again,
and be forgiven."

Mark 4:13 And he said to
them, "Do you not
understand this parable?
How then will you
understand all the parables?
Mark 4:14 The sower
sows the word.
Mark 4:15 And these are
the ones along the path,
where the word is sown;
when they hear, Satan
immediately comes and
takes away the word which
is sown in them.
Mark 4:16 And these in
like manner are the ones
sown upon rocky ground,
who, when they hear the
word, immediately receive
it with joy;
Mark 4:17 and they have
no root in themselves, but
endure for a while; then,
when tribulation or
persecution arises on
account of the word,
immediately they fall away.
Mark 4:18 And others are
the ones sown among
thorns; they are those who
hear the word,
Mark 4:19 but the cares of
the world, and the delight
in riches, and the desire for
other things, enter in and
choke the word, and it
proves unfruitful.
Mark 4:20 But those that
were sown upon the good
soil are the ones who hear
the word and accept it and
bear fruit, thirtyfold and
sixtyfold and a
hundredfold."

Mark 4:30 And he said,
"With what can we
compare the kingdom of
God, or what parable shall
we use for it?
Mark 4:31 It is like a grain
of mustard seed, which,
when sown upon the
ground, is the smallest of
all the seeds on earth;
Mark 4:32 yet when it is
sown it grows up and
becomes the greatest of all
shrubs, and puts forth large
branches, so that the birds
of the air can make nests in
its shade."

Mark 4:34 he did not
speak to them without a
parable, but privately to his
own disciples he explained
everything.

Mark 6:1 He went away
from there and came to his
own country; and his
disciples followed him.
Mark 6:2 And on the
sabbath he began to teach
in the synagogue; and many
who heard him were
astonished, saying, "Where
did this man get all this?
What is the wisdom given
to him? What mighty
works are wrought by his
hands!
Mark 6:3 Is not this the
carpenter, the son of Mary
and brother of James and
Joses and Judas and Simon,
and are not his sisters here
with us?" And they took
offense at him.
Mark 6:4 And Jesus said
to them, "A prophet is not
without honor, except in
his own country, and
among his own kin, and in
his own house."
Mark 6:5 And he could do
no mighty work there,
except that he laid his
hands upon a few sick
people and healed them.
Mark 6:6 And he marveled
because of their unbelief.
And he went about among
the villages teaching.

LUKE

Luke 8:4 And when a
great crowd came together
and people from town after
town came to him, he said
in a parable:
Luke 8:5 "A sower went
out to sow his seed; and as
he sowed, some fell along
the path, and was trodden
under foot, and the birds of
the air devoured it.
Luke 8:6 And some fell on
the rock; and as it grew up,
it withered away, because
it had no moisture.
Luke 8:7 And some fell
among thorns; and the
thorns grew with it and
choked it.
Luke 8:8 And some fell
into good soil and grew,
and yielded a hundredfold."
As he said this, he called
out, "He who has ears to
hear, let him hear."
Luke 8:9 And when his
disciples asked him what
this parable meant,
Luke 8:10 he said, "To
you it has been given to
know the secrets of the
kingdom of God; but for
others they are in parables,
so that seeing they may not
see, and hearing they may
not understand.

Luke 10:23 Then turning
to the disciples he said
privately, "Blessed are the
eyes which see what you
see!
Luke 10:24 For I tell you
that many prophets and
kings desired to see what
you see, and did not see it,
and to hear what you hear,
and did not hear it."

Luke 8:11 Now the
parable is this: The seed is
the word of God.
Luke 8:12 The ones along
the path are those who
have heard; then the devil
comes and takes away the
word from their hearts, that
they may not believe and
be saved.
Luke 8:13 And the ones
on the rock are those who,
when they hear the word,
receive it with joy; but
these have no root, they
believe for a while and in
time of temptation fall
away.
Luke 8:14 And as for what
fell among the thorns, they
are those who hear, but as
they go on their way they
are choked by the cares
and riches and pleasures of
life, and their fruit does not
mature.
Luke 8:15 And as for that
in the good soil, they are
those who, hearing the
word, hold it fast in an
honest and good heart, and
bring forth fruit with
patience.

Luke 13:18 He said
therefore, "What is the
kingdom of God like? And
to what shall I compare it?
Luke 13:19 It is like a
grain of mustard seed
which a man took and
sowed in his garden; and it
grew and became a tree,
and the birds of the air
made nests in its branches."

Luke 13:21 It is like
leaven which a woman
took and hid in three
measures of flour, till it
was all leavened."
