THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELS COMPARED

The Gospel of Luke
Chapter 9

LUKE
Chapter 9

1 And he called the
twelve together and gave
them power and authority
over all demons and to
cure diseases,

2 and he sent them out to
preach the kingdom of
God and to heal.

3 And he said to them,
"Take nothing for your
journey, no staff, nor bag,
nor bread, nor money; and
do not have two tunics.
4 And whatever house
you enter, stay there, and
from there depart.
5 And wherever they do
not receive you, when you
leave that town shake off
the dust from your feet as
a testimony against them."

6 And they departed and
went through the villages,
preaching the gospel and
healing everywhere.

7 Now Herod the tetrarch
heard of all that was done,
and he was perplexed,
because it was said by
some that John had been
raised from the dead,
8 by some that Elijah had
appeared, and by others
that one of the old
prophets had risen.
9 Herod said, "John I
beheaded; but who is this
about whom I hear such
things?" And he sought to
see him.

10 On their return the
apostles told him what
they had done. And he
took them and withdrew
apart to a city called
Bethsaida.
11 When the crowds
learned it, they followed
him; and he welcomed
them and spoke to them of
the kingdom of God, and
cured those who had need
of healing.
12 Now the day began to
wear away; and the twelve
came and said to him,
"Send the crowd away, to
go into the villages and
country round about, to
lodge and get provisions;
for we are here in a lonely
place."
13 But he said to them,
"You give them something
to eat." They said, "We
have no more than five
loaves and two
fish unless we are to go
and buy food for all these
people."
14 For there were about
five thousand men. And he
said to his disciples,
"Make them sit down in
companies, about fifty
each."
15 And they did so, and
made them all sit down.
16 And taking the five
loaves and the two fish he
looked up to heaven, and
blessed and broke them,
and gave them to the
disciples to set before the
crowd.
17 And all ate and were
satisfied. And they took up
what was left over, twelve
baskets of broken pieces.

18 Now it happened that
as he was praying alone
the disciples were with
him; and he asked them,
"Who do the people say
that I am?"
19 And they answered,
"John the Baptist; but
others say, Elijah; and
others, that one of the old
prophets has risen."
20 And he said to them,
"But who do you say that I
am?" And Peter answered,
"The Christ of God."

21 But he charged and
commanded them to tell
this to no one,

22 saying, "The Son of
man must suffer many
things, and be rejected by
the elders and chief priests
and scribes, and be killed,
and on the third day be
raised."
23 And he said to all, "If
any man would come after
me, let him deny himself
and take up his cross daily
and follow me.
24 For whoever would
save his life will lose it;
and whoever loses his life
for my sake, he will save
it.
25 For what does it profit
a man if he gains the
whole world and loses or
forfeits himself?
26 For whoever is
ashamed of me and of my
words, of him will the Son
of man be ashamed when
he comes in his glory and
the glory of the Father and
of the holy angels.
27 But I tell you truly,
there are some standing
here who will not taste
death before they see the
kingdom of God."

28 Now about eight days
after these sayings he took
with him Peter and John
and James, and went up on
the mountain to pray.
29 And as he was
praying, the appearance of
his countenance was
altered, and his raiment
became dazzling white.
30 And behold, two men
talked with him, Moses
and Elijah,
31 who appeared in glory
and spoke of his departure,
which he was to
accomplish at Jerusalem.
32 Now Peter and those
who were with him were
heavy with sleep, and
when they wakened they
saw his glory and the two
men who stood with him.
33 And as the men were
parting from him, Peter
said to Jesus, "Master, it is
well that we are here; let
us make three booths, one
for you and one for Moses
and one for Elijah" not
knowing what he said.
34 As he said this, a cloud
came and overshadowed
them; and they were afraid
as they entered the cloud.
35 And a voice came out
of the cloud, saying, "This
is my Son, my Chosen;
listen to him!"
36 And when the voice
had spoken, Jesus was
found alone. And they
kept silence and told no
one in those days anything
of what they had seen.

37 On the next day,
when they had come down
from the mountain, a great
crowd met him.
38 And behold, a man
from the crowd cried,
"Teacher, I beg you to
look upon my son, for he
is my only child;
39 and behold, a spirit
seizes him, and he
suddenly cries out; it
convulses him till he
foams, and shatters him,
and will hardly leave him.
40 And I begged your
disciples to cast it out, but
they could not."
41 Jesus answered, "O
faithless and perverse
generation, how long am I
to be with you and bear
with you? Bring your son
here."
42 While he was coming,
the demon tore him and
convulsed him. But Jesus
rebuked the unclean spirit,
and healed the boy, and
gave him back to his
father.

43 And all were
astonished at the majesty
of God. But while they
were all marveling at
everything he did, he said
to his disciples,
44 "Let these words sink
into your ears; for the Son
of man is to be delivered
into the hands of men."
45 But they did not
understand this saying, and
it was concealed from
them, that they should not
perceive it; and they were
afraid to ask him about this
saying.

46 And an argument arose
among them as to which of
them was the greatest.
47 But when Jesus
perceived the thought of
their hearts, he took a child
and put him by his side,
48 and said to them,
"Whoever receives this
child in my name receives
me, and whoever receives
me receives him who sent
me; for he who is least
among you all is the one
who is great."

49 John answered,
"Master, we saw a man
casting out demons in your
name, and we forbade
him, because he does not
follow with us."
50 But Jesus said to him,
"Do not forbid him; for he
that is not against you is
for you."

51 When the days drew
near for him to be received
up, he set his face to go to
Jerusalem.

52 And he sent
messengers ahead of him,
who went and entered a
village of the Samaritans,
to make ready for him;
53 but the people would
not receive him, because
his face was set toward
Jerusalem.
54 And when his disciples
James and John saw it,
they said, "Lord, do you
want us to bid fire come
down from heaven and
consume them?"
55 But he turned and
rebuked them.
56 And they went on to
another village.

57 As they were going
along the road, a man said
to him, "I will follow you
wherever you go."
58 And Jesus said to him,
"Foxes have holes, and
birds of the air have nests;
but the Son of man has
nowhere to lay his head."
59 To another he said,
"Follow me." But he said,
"Lord, let me first go and
bury my father."
60 But he said to him,
"Leave the dead to bury
their own dead; but as for
you, go and proclaim the
kingdom of God."

61 Another said, "I will
follow you, Lord; but let
me first say farewell to
those at my home."
62 Jesus said to him, "No
one who puts his hand to
the plow and looks back is
fit for the kingdom of
God."

MARK

Mark 6:7 And he called
to him the twelve, and
began to send them out
two by two, and gave them
authority over the unclean
spirits.

Mark 6:8 He charged
them to take nothing for
their journey except a
staff; no bread, no bag, no
money in their belts;
Mark 6:9 but to wear
sandals and not put on two
tunics.
Mark 6:10 And he said to
them, "Where you enter a
house, stay there until you
leave the place.
Mark 6:11 And if any
place will not receive you
and they refuse to hear
you, when you leave,
shake off the dust that is
on your feet for a
testimony against them."

Mark 6:12 So they went
out and preached that men
should repent.

Mark 6:14 King Herod
heard of it; for Jesus'
name had become known.
Some said, "John the
baptizer has been raised
from the dead; that is why
these powers are at work
in him."

Mark 6:32 And they went
away in the boat to a
lonely place by
themselves.
Mark 6:33 Now many
saw them going, and knew
them, and they ran there on
foot from all the towns,
and got there ahead of
them.
Mark 6:34 As he went
ashore he saw a great
throng, and he had
compassion on them,
because they were like
sheep without a shepherd;
and he began to teach them
many things.
Mark 6:35 And when it
grew late, his disciples
came to him and said,
"This is a lonely place, and
the hour is now late;
Mark 6:36 send them
away, to go into the
country and villages round
about and buy themselves
something to eat."
Mark 6:37 But he
answered them, "You give
them something to eat."
And they said to him,
"Shall we go and buy two
hundred denarii worth of
bread, and give it to them
to eat?"
Mark 6:38 And he said to
them, "How many loaves
have you? Go and see."
And when they had found
out, they said, "Five, and
two fish."
Mark 6:39 Then he
commanded them all to sit
down by companies upon
the green grass.
Mark 6:40 So they sat
down in groups, by
hundreds and by fifties.
Mark 6:41 And taking the
five loaves and the two
fish he looked up to
heaven, and blessed, and
broke the loaves, and gave
them to the disciples to set
before the people; and he
divided the two fish
among them all.
Mark 6:42 And they all
ate and were satisfied.
Mark 6:43 And they took
up twelve baskets full of
broken pieces and of the
fish.
Mark 6:44 And those who
ate the loaves were five
thousand men.

Mark 8:27 And Jesus
went on with his disciples,
to the villages of Caesarea
Philippi; and on the way
he asked his disciples,
"Who do men say that I
am?"
Mark 8:28 And they told
him, "John the Baptist; and
others say, Elijah; and
others one of the
prophets."
Mark 8:29 And he asked
them, "But who do you
say that I am?" Peter
answered him, "You are
the Christ."

Mark 8:30 And he
charged them to tell no one
about him.

Mark 8:31 And he began
to teach them that the Son
of man must suffer many
things, and be rejected by
the elders and the chief
priests and the scribes, and
be killed, and after three
days rise again.
Mark 8:32 And he said
this plainly. And Peter
took him, and began to
rebuke him.
Mark 8:33 But turning
and seeing his disciples, he
rebuked Peter, and said,
"Get behind me, Satan!
For you are not on the side
of God, but of men."
Mark 8:34 And he called
to him the multitude with
his disciples, and said to
them, "If any man would
come after me, let him
deny himself and take up
his cross and follow me.
Mark 8:35 For whoever
would save his life will
lose it; and whoever loses
his life for my sake and the
gospel's will save it.
Mark 8:36 For what does
it profit a man, to gain the
whole world and forfeit his
life?
Mark 8:37 For what can a
man give in return for his
life?
Mark 8:38 For whoever is
ashamed of me and of my
words in this adulterous
and sinful generation, of
him will the Son of man
also be ashamed, when he
comes in the glory of his
Father with the holy
angels."
Mark 9:1 And he said to
them, "Truly, I say to you,
there are some standing
here who will not taste
death before they see that
the kingdom of God has
come with power."

Mark 9:2 And after six
days Jesus took with him
Peter and James and John,
and led them up a high
mountain apart by
themselves; and he was
transfigured before them,
Mark 9:3 and his
garments became
glistening, intensely white,
as no fuller on earth could
bleach them.
Mark 9:4 And there
appeared to them Elijah
with Moses; and they were
talking to Jesus.
Mark 9:5 And Peter said
to Jesus, "Master, it is well
that we are here; let us
make three booths, one for
you and one for Moses
and one for Elijah."
Mark 9:6 For he did not
know what to say, for they
were exceedingly afraid.
Mark 9:7 And a cloud
overshadowed them, and a
voice came out of the
cloud, "This is my beloved
Son; listen to him."
Mark 9:8 And suddenly
looking around they no
longer saw any one with
them but Jesus only.

Mark 9:14 And when
they came to the disciples,
they saw a great crowd
about them, and scribes
arguing with them.
Mark 9:15 And
immediately all the crowd,
when they saw him, were
greatly amazed, and ran up
to him and greeted him.
Mark 9:16 And he asked
them, "What are you
discussing with them?"
Mark 9:17 And one of the
crowd answered him,
"Teacher, I brought my
son to you, for he has a
dumb spirit;
Mark 9:18 and wherever
it seizes him, it dashes him
down; and he foams and
grinds his teeth and
becomes rigid; and I asked
your disciples to cast it
out, and they were not
able."
Mark 9:19 And he
answered them, "O
faithless generation, how
long am I to be with you?
How long am I to bear
with you? Bring him to
me."
Mark 9:20 And they
brought the boy to him;
and when the spirit saw
him, immediately it
convulsed the boy, and he
fell on the ground and
rolled about, foaming at
the mouth.
Mark 9:21 And Jesus
asked his father, "How
long has he had this?" And
he said, "From childhood.
Mark 9:22 And it has
often cast him into the fire
and into the water, to
destroy him; but if you can
do anything, have pity on
us and help us."
Mark 9:23 And Jesus said
to him, "If you can! All
things are possible to him
who believes."
Mark 9:24 Immediately
the father of the child cried
out and said, "I believe;
help my unbelief!"
Mark 9:25 And when
Jesus saw that a crowd
came running together, he
rebuked the unclean spirit,
saying to it, "You dumb
and deaf spirit, I command
you, come out of him, and
never enter him again."
Mark 9:26 And after
crying out and convulsing
him terribly, it came out,
and the boy was like a
corpse; so that most of
them said, "He is dead."
Mark 9:27 But Jesus took
him by the hand and lifted
him up, and he arose.

Mark 9:32 But they did
not understand the saying,
and they were afraid to ask
him.

Mark 9:33 And they came
to Capernaum; and when
he was in the house he
asked them, "What were
you discussing on the
way?"
Mark 9:34 But they were
silent; for on the way they
had discussed with one
another who was the
greatest.
Mark 9:35 And he sat
down and called the
twelve; and he said to
them, "If any one would
be first, he must be last of
all and servant of all."
Mark 9:36 And he took a
child, and put him in the
midst of them; and taking
him in his arms, he said to
them,
Mark 9:37 "Whoever
receives one such child in
my name receives me; and
whoever receives me,
receives not me but him
who sent me."

Mark 9:38 John said to
him, "Teacher, we saw a
man casting out demons in
your name, and we
forbade him, because he
was not following us."
Mark 9:39 But Jesus said,
"Do not forbid him; for no
one who does a mighty
work in my name will be
able soon after to speak
evil of me.
Mark 9:40 For he that is
not against us is for us.

Mark 16:19 So then the
Lord Jesus, after he had
spoken to them, was taken
up into heaven, and sat
down at the right hand of
God.

MATTHEW

Matthew 10:5 These
twelve Jesus sent out,
charging them, "Go
nowhere among the
Gentiles, and enter no
town of the Samaritans,

Matthew 10:7 And preach
as you go, saying, 'The
kingdom of heaven is at
hand.'

Matthew 10:9 Take no
gold, nor silver, nor
copper in your belts,
Matthew 10:10 no bag for
your journey, nor two
tunics, nor sandals, nor a
staff; for the laborer
deserves his food.
Matthew 10:11 And
whatever town or village
you enter, find out who is
worthy in it, and stay with
him until you depart.
Matthew 10:12 As you
enter the house, salute it.
Matthew 10:13 And if the
house is worthy, let your
peace come upon it; but if
it is not worthy, let your
peace return to you.
Matthew 10:14 And if any
one will not receive you or
listen to your words, shake
off the dust from your feet
as you leave that house or
town.
Matthew 10:15 Truly, I
say to you, it shall be more
tolerable on the day of
judgment for the land of
Sodom and Gomorrah than
for that town.

Matthew 14:1 At that
time Herod the tetrarch
heard about the fame of
Jesus;
Matthew 14:2 and he said
to his servants, "This is
John the Baptist, he has
been raised from the dead;
that is why these powers
are at work in him."

Matthew 14:13 Now
when Jesus heard this, he
withdrew from there in a
boat to a lonely place
apart. But when the
crowds heard it, they
followed him on foot from
the towns.
Matthew 14:14 As he
went ashore he saw a great
throng; and he had
compassion on them, and
healed their sick.
Matthew 14:15 When it
was evening, the disciples
came to him and said,
"This is a lonely place, and
the day is now over; send
the crowds away to go into
the villages and buy food
for themselves."
Matthew 14:16 Jesus said,
"They need not go away;
you give them something
to eat."
Matthew 14:17 They said
to him, "We have only five
loaves here and two fish."
Matthew 14:18 And he
said, "Bring them here to
me."
Matthew 14:19 Then he
ordered the crowds to sit
down on the grass; and
taking the five loaves and
the two fish he looked up
to heaven, and blessed,
and broke and gave the
loaves to the disciples, and
the disciples gave them to
the crowds.
Matthew 14:20 And they
all ate and were satisfied.
And they took up twelve
baskets full of the broken
pieces left over.
Matthew 14:21 And those
who ate were about five
thousand men, besides
women and children.

Matthew 16:13 Now
when Jesus came into the
district of Caesarea
Philippi, he asked his
disciples, "Who do men
say that the Son of man
is?"
Matthew 16:14 And they
said, "Some say John the
Baptist, others say Elijah,
and others Jeremiah or one
of the prophets."
Matthew 16:15 He said to
them, "But who do you
say that I am?"
Matthew 16:16 Simon
Peter replied, "You are the
Christ, the Son of the
living God."

Matthew 16:20 Then he
strictly charged the
disciples to tell no one that
he was the Christ.

Matthew 16:21 From
that time Jesus began to
show his disciples that he
must go to Jerusalem and
suffer many things from
the elders and chief priests
and scribes, and be killed,
and on the third day be
raised.
Matthew 16:22 And Peter
took him and began to
rebuke him, saying, "God
forbid, Lord! This shall
never happen to you."
Matthew 16:23 But he
turned and said to Peter,
"Get behind me, Satan!
You are a hindrance to me;
for you are not on the side
of God, but of men."
Matthew 16:24 Then
Jesus told his disciples, "If
any man would come after
me, let him deny himself
and take up his cross and
follow me.
Matthew 16:25 For
whoever would save his
life will lose it, and
whoever loses his life for
my sake will find it.
Matthew 16:26 For what
will it profit a man, if he
gains the whole world and
forfeits his life? Or what
shall a man give in return
for his life?
Matthew 16:27 For the
Son of man is to come
with his angels in the glory
of his Father, and then he
will repay every man for
what he has done.
Matthew 16:28 Truly, I
say to you, there are some
standing here who will not
taste death before they see
the Son of man coming in
his kingdom."

Matthew 17:1 And after
six days Jesus took with
him Peter and James and
John his brother, and led
them up a high mountain
apart.
Matthew 17:2 And he was
transfigured before them,
and his face shone like the
sun, and his garments
became white as light.
Matthew 17:3 And
behold, there appeared to
them Moses and Elijah,
talking with him.
Matthew 17:4 And Peter
said to Jesus, "Lord, it is
well that we are here; if
you wish, I will make
three booths here, one for
you and one for Moses
and one for Elijah."
Matthew 17:5 He was still
speaking, when lo, a bright
cloud overshadowed them,
and a voice from the cloud
said, "This is my beloved
Son, with whom I am well
pleased; listen to him."
Matthew 17:6 When the
disciples heard this, they
fell on their faces, and
were filled with awe.
Matthew 17:7 But Jesus
came and touched them,
saying, "Rise, and have no
fear."
Matthew 17:8 And when
they lifted up their eyes,
they saw no one but Jesus
only.

Matthew 17:14 And
when they came to the
crowd, a man came up to
him and kneeling before
him said,
Matthew 17:15 "Lord,
have mercy on my son, for
he is an epileptic and he
suffers terribly; for often
he falls into the fire, and
often into the water.
Matthew 17:16 And I
brought him to your
disciples, and they could
not heal him."
Matthew 17:17 And Jesus
answered, "O faithless and
perverse generation, how
long am I to be with you?
How long am I to bear
with you? Bring him here
to me."
Matthew 17:18 And Jesus
rebuked him, and the
demon came out of him,
and the boy was cured
instantly.

Matthew 18:1 At that
time the disciples came to
Jesus, saying, "Who is the
greatest in the kingdom of
heaven?"
Matthew 18:2 And calling
to him a child, he put him
in the midst of them,
Matthew 18:3 and said,
"Truly, I say to you,
unless you turn and
become like children, you
will never enter the
kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18:4 Whoever
humbles himself like this
child, he is the greatest in
the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18:5 "Whoever
receives one such child in
my name receives me;

scribe came up and said to
him, "Teacher, I will

said to him, "Foxes have
holes, and birds of the air
have nests; but the Son of

Matthew 8:21 Another of
the disciples said to him,
"Lord, let me first go and
bury my father."
Matthew 8:22 But Jesus
said to him, "Follow me,
and leave the dead to bury
their own dead."
