THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELS COMPARED

The Gospel of Luke
Chapter 8

LUKE
Chapter 8

1 Soon afterward he
went on through cities and
villages, preaching and
bringing the good news of
the kingdom of God. And
the twelve were with him,
2 and also some women
who had been healed of
evil spirits and infirmities:
Mary, called Magdalene,
from whom seven demons
had gone out,
3 and Joanna, the wife of
Chuza, Herod's steward,
and Susanna, and many
others, who provided for
them out of their means.

4 And when a great
crowd came together and
people from town after
town came to him, he said
in a parable:
5 "A sower went out to
sow his seed; and as he
sowed, some fell along the
path, and was trodden
under foot, and the birds of
the air devoured it.
6 And some fell on the
rock; and as it grew up, it
withered away, because it
had no moisture.
7 And some fell among
thorns; and the thorns grew
with it and choked it.
8 And some fell into good
soil and grew, and yielded
a hundredfold." As he said
this, he called out, "He
who has ears to hear, let
him hear."

9 And when his disciples
asked him what this
parable meant,
10 he said, "To you it has
been given to know the
secrets of the kingdom of
God; but for others they
are in parables, so that
seeing they may not see,
and hearing they may not
understand.
11 Now the parable is
this: The seed is the word
of God.
12 The ones along the
path are those who have
heard; then the devil
comes and takes away the
word from their hearts,
that they may not believe
and be saved.
13 And the ones on the
rock are those who, when
they hear the word, receive
it with joy; but these have
no root, they believe for a
while and in time of
temptation fall away.
14 And as for what fell
among the thorns, they are
those who hear, but as they
go on their way they are
choked by the cares and
riches and pleasures of
life, and their fruit does
not mature.
15 And as for that in the
good soil, they are those
who, hearing the word,
hold it fast in an honest
and good heart, and bring
forth fruit with patience.

16 "No one after lighting
a lamp covers it with a
vessel, or puts it under a
bed, but puts it on a stand,
that those who enter may
see the light.

17 For nothing is hid that
shall not be made
manifest, nor anything
secret that shall not be
known and come to light.

18 Take heed then how
you hear; for to him who
has will more be given,
and from him who has not,
even what he thinks that he
has will be taken away."

19 Then his mother and
his brothers came to him,
but they could not reach
him for the crowd.
20 And he was told,
"Your mother and your
brothers are standing
outside, desiring to see
you."
21 But he said to them,
"My mother and my
brothers are those who
hear the word of God and
do it."

22 One day he got into a
boat with his disciples, and
he said to them, "Let us go
across to the other side of
the lake." So they set out,
23 and as they sailed he
fell asleep. And a storm of
wind came down on the
lake, and they were filling
with water, and were in
danger.
24 And they went and
woke him, saying,
"Master, Master, we are
perishing!" And he awoke
and rebuked the wind and
the raging waves; and they
ceased, and there was a
calm.
25 He said to them,
"Where is your faith?"
And they were afraid, and
they marveled, saying to
one another, "Who then is
this, that he commands
even wind and water, and
they obey him?"

26 Then they arrived at
the country of the
Gerasenes, which is
opposite Galilee.
27 And as he stepped out
on land, there met him a
man from the city who had
demons; for a long time he
had worn no clothes, and
he lived not in a house but
among the tombs.
28 When he saw Jesus, he
cried out and fell down
before him, and said with a
loud voice, "What have
you to do with me, Jesus,
Son of the Most High
God? I beseech you, do
not torment me."
29 For he had
commanded the unclean
spirit to come out of the
man. (For many a time it
had seized him; he was
kept under guard, and
bound with chains and
fetters, but he broke the
bonds and was driven by
the demon into the desert.)
30 Jesus then asked him,
"What is your name?" And
he said, "Legion"; for
many demons had entered
him.
31 And they begged him
not to command them to
depart into the abyss.
32 Now a large herd of
swine was feeding there on
the hillside; and they
begged him to let them
enter these. So he gave
them leave.
33 Then the demons came
out of the man and entered
the swine, and the herd
rushed down the steep
bank into the lake and
were drowned.
34 When the herdsmen
saw what had happened,
they fled, and told it in the
city and in the country.
35 Then people went out
to see what had happened,
and they came to Jesus,
and found the man from
whom the demons had
gone, sitting at the feet of
Jesus, clothed and in his
right mind; and they were
afraid.
36 And those who had
seen it told them how he
who had been possessed
with demons was healed.
37 Then all the people of
the surrounding country of
the Gerasenes asked him
to depart from them; for
they were seized with
great fear; so he got into
the boat and returned.

38 The man from whom
the demons had gone
begged that he might be
with him; but he sent him
away, saying,
39 "Return to your home,
and declare how much
God has done for you."
And he went away,
proclaiming throughout the
whole city how much
Jesus had done for him.

40 Now when Jesus
returned, the crowd
welcomed him, for they
were all waiting for him.

41 And there came a man
named Jairus, who was a
ruler of the synagogue;
and falling at Jesus' feet he
besought him to come to
his house,
42 for he had an only
daughter, about twelve
years of age, and she was
dying. As he went, the
people pressed round him.
43 And a woman who had
had a flow of blood for
twelve years and could not
be healed by any one,
44 came up behind him,
and touched the fringe of
his garment; and
immediately her flow of
blood ceased.
45 And Jesus said, "Who
was it that touched me?"
When all denied it, Peter
said, "Master, the
multitudes surround you
and press upon you!"
46 But Jesus said, "Some
one touched me; for I
perceive that power has
gone forth from me."
47 And when the woman
saw that she was not
hidden, she came
trembling, and falling
down before him declared
in the presence of all the
people why she had
touched him, and how she
had been immediately
healed.
48 And he said to her,
"Daughter, your faith has
made you well; go in
peace."
49 While he was still
speaking, a man from the
ruler's house came and
said, "Your daughter is
dead; do not trouble the
Teacher any more."
50 But Jesus on hearing
this answered him, "Do
not fear; only believe, and
she shall be well."
51 And when he came to
the house, he permitted no
one to enter with him,
except Peter and John and
James, and the father and
mother of the child.
52 And all were weeping
and bewailing her; but he
said, "Do not weep; for
she is not dead but
sleeping."
53 And they laughed at
him, knowing that she was
dead.
54 But taking her by the
hand he called, saying,
"Child, arise."
55 And her spirit returned,
and she got up at once;
and he directed that
something should be given
her to eat.
56 And her parents were
amazed; but he charged
them to tell no one what
had happened.

MARK

Mark 4:1 Again he
began to teach beside the
sea. And a very large
crowd gathered about him,
so that he got into a boat
and sat in it on the sea; and
the whole crowd was
beside the sea on the land.
Mark 4:2 And he taught
them many things in
parables, and in his
teaching he said to them:
Mark 4:3 "Listen! A
sower went out to sow.
Mark 4:4 And as he
sowed, some seed fell
along the path, and the
birds came and devoured
it.
Mark 4:5 Other seed fell
on rocky ground, where it
had not much soil, and
immediately it sprang up,
since it had no depth of
soil;
Mark 4:6 and when the
sun rose it was scorched,
and since it had no root it
withered away.
Mark 4:7 Other seed fell
among thorns and the
thorns grew up and choked
it, and it yielded no grain.
Mark 4:8 And other seeds
fell into good soil and
brought forth grain,
growing up and increasing
and yielding thirtyfold and
sixtyfold and a
hundredfold."
Mark 4:9 And he said,
"He who has ears to hear,
let him hear."

Mark 4:10 And when he
was alone, those who were
about him with the twelve
asked him concerning the
parables.
Mark 4:11 And he said to
them, "To you has been
given the secret of the
kingdom of God, but for
those outside everything is
in parables;
Mark 4:12 so that they
may indeed see but not
perceive, and may indeed
hear but not understand;
lest they should turn again,
and be forgiven."
Mark 4:13 And he said to
them, "Do you not
understand this parable?
How then will you
understand all the
parables?
Mark 4:14 The sower
sows the word.
Mark 4:15 And these are
the ones along the path,
where the word is sown;
when they hear, Satan
immediately comes and
takes away the word
which is sown in them.
Mark 4:16 And these in
like manner are the ones
sown upon rocky ground,
who, when they hear the
word, immediately receive
it with joy;
Mark 4:17 and they have
no root in themselves, but
endure for a while; then,
when tribulation or
persecution arises on
account of the word,
immediately they fall
away.
Mark 4:18 And others are
the ones sown among
thorns; they are those who
hear the word,
Mark 4:19 but the cares of
the world, and the delight
in riches, and the desire for
other things, enter in and
choke the word, and it
proves unfruitful.
Mark 4:20 But those that
were sown upon the good
soil are the ones who hear
the word and accept it and
bear fruit, thirtyfold and
sixtyfold and a
hundredfold."

Mark 4:21 And he said
to them, "Is a lamp
brought in to be put under
a bushel, or under a bed,
and not on a stand?

Mark 4:22 For there is
nothing hid, except to be
made manifest; nor is
anything secret, except to
come to light.

Mark 3:31 And his
mother and his brothers
came; and standing outside
they sent to him and called
him.
Mark 3:32 And a crowd
was sitting about him; and
they said to him, "Your
mother and your brothers
are outside, asking for
you."
Mark 3:33 And he
replied, "Who are my
mother and my brothers?"
Mark 3:34 And looking
around on those who sat
about him, he said, "Here
are my mother and my
brothers!
Mark 3:35 Whoever does
the will of God is my
brother, and sister, and
mother."

Mark 4:36 And leaving
the crowd, they took him
with them in the boat, just
as he was. And other boats
were with him.
Mark 4:37 And a great
storm of wind arose, and
the waves beat into the
boat, so that the boat was
already filling.
Mark 4:38 But he was in
the stern, asleep on the
cushion; and they woke
him and said to him,
"Teacher, do you not care
if we perish?"
Mark 4:39 And he awoke
and rebuked the wind, and
said to the sea, "Peace! Be
still!" And the wind
ceased, and there was a
great calm.
Mark 4:40 He said to
them, "Why are you
afraid? Have you no
faith?"
Mark 4:41 And they were
filled with awe, and said to
one another, "Who then is
this, that even wind and
sea obey him?"

Mark 5:1 They came to
the other side of the sea, to
the country of the
Gerasenes.
Mark 5:2 And when he
had come out of the boat,
there met him out of the
tombs a man with an
unclean spirit,
Mark 5:3 who lived
among the tombs; and no
one could bind him any
more, even with a chain;
Mark 5:4 for he had often
been bound with fetters
and chains, but the chains
he wrenched apart, and the
fetters he broke in pieces;
and no one had the
strength to subdue him.
Mark 5:5 Night and day
among the tombs and on
the mountains he was
always crying out, and
bruising himself with
stones.
Mark 5:6 And when he
saw Jesus from afar, he
ran and worshiped him;
Mark 5:7 and crying out
with a loud voice, he said,
"What have you to do with
me, Jesus, Son of the Most
High God? I adjure you by
God, do not torment me."
Mark 5:8 For he had said
to him, "Come out of the
man, you unclean spirit!"
Mark 5:9 And Jesus asked
him, "What is your name?"
He replied, "My name is
Legion; for we are many."
Mark 5:10 And he begged
him eagerly not to send
them out of the country.
Mark 5:11 Now a great
herd of swine was feeding
there on the hillside;
Mark 5:12 and they
begged him, "Send us to
the swine, let us enter
them."
Mark 5:13 So he gave
them leave. And the
unclean spirits came out,
and entered the swine; and
the herd, numbering about
two thousand, rushed
down the steep bank into
the sea, and were drowned
in the sea.
Mark 5:14 The herdsmen
fled, and told it in the city
and in the country. And
people came to see what it
was that had happened.
Mark 5:15 And they came
to Jesus, and saw the
demoniac sitting there,
clothed and in his right
mind, the man who had
had the legion; and they
were afraid.
Mark 5:16 And those who
had seen it told what had
happened to the demoniac
and to the swine.
Mark 5:17 And they
began to beg Jesus to
depart from their
neighborhood.

Mark 5:18 And as he was
getting into the boat, the
man who had been
possessed with demons
begged him that he might
be with him.
Mark 5:19 But he refused,
and said to him, "Go home
to your friends, and tell
them how much the Lord
has done for you, and how
he has had mercy on you."
Mark 5:20 And he went
away and began to
proclaim in the Decapolis
how much Jesus had done
for him; and all men
marveled.

Mark 5:22 Then came one
of the rulers of the
synagogue, Jairus by
name; and seeing him, he
fell at his feet,
Mark 5:23 and besought
him, saying, "My little
daughter is at the point of
death. Come and lay your
hands on her, so that she
may be made well, and
live."
Mark 5:24 And he went
with him. And a great
crowd followed him and
thronged about him.
Mark 5:25 And there was
a woman who had had a
flow of blood for twelve
years,
Mark 5:26 and who had
suffered much under many
physicians, and had spent
all that she had, and was
no better but rather grew
worse.
Mark 5:27 She had heard
the reports about Jesus,
and came up behind him in
the crowd and touched his
garment.
Mark 5:28 For she said,
"If I touch even his
garments, I shall be made
well."
Mark 5:29 And
immediately the
hemorrhage ceased; and
she felt in her body that
she was healed of her
disease.
Mark 5:30 And Jesus,
perceiving in himself that
power had gone forth from
him, immediately turned
about in the crowd, and
said, "Who touched my
garments?"
Mark 5:31 And his
disciples said to him, "You
see the crowd pressing
around you, and yet you
say, 'Who touched me?'"
Mark 5:32 And he looked
around to see who had
done it.
Mark 5:33 But the
woman, knowing what had
been done to her, came in
fear and trembling and fell
down before him, and told
him the whole truth.
Mark 5:34 And he said to
her, "Daughter, your faith
has made you well; go in
peace, and be healed of
your disease."
Mark 5:35 While he was
still speaking, there came
from the ruler's house
some who said, "Your
daughter is dead. Why
trouble the Teacher any
further?"
Mark 5:36 But ignoring
what they said, Jesus said
to the ruler of the
synagogue, "Do not fear,
only believe."
Mark 5:37 And he
allowed no one to follow
him except Peter and
James and John the brother
of James.
Mark 5:38 When they
came to the house of the
ruler of the synagogue, he
saw a tumult, and people
weeping and wailing
loudly.
Mark 5:39 And when he
had entered, he said to
them, "Why do you make
a tumult and weep? The
child is not dead but
sleeping."
Mark 5:40 And they
laughed at him. But he put
them all outside, and took
the child's father and
mother and those who
were with him, and went
in where the child was.
Mark 5:41 Taking her by
the hand he said to her,
"Talitha cumi"; which
means, "Little girl, I say to
you, arise."
Mark 5:42 And
immediately the girl got up
and walked (she was
twelve years of age), and
they were immediately
overcome with
amazement.
Mark 5:43 And he strictly
charged them that no one
should know this, and told
them to give her something
to eat.

MATTHEW

Matthew 13:2 And great
crowds gathered about
him, so that he got into a
boat and sat there; and the
whole crowd stood on the
beach.
Matthew 13:3 And he told
them many things in
parables, saying: "A sower
went out to sow.
Matthew 13:4 And as he
sowed, some seeds fell
along the path, and the
birds came and devoured
them.
Matthew 13:5 Other seeds
fell on rocky ground,
where they had not much
soil, and immediately they
sprang up, since they had
no depth of soil,
Matthew 13:6 but when
the sun rose they were
scorched; and since they
had no root they withered
away.
Matthew 13:7 Other seeds
fell upon thorns, and the
thorns grew up and choked
them.
Matthew 13:8 Other seeds
fell on good soil and
brought forth grain, some a
hundredfold, some sixty,
some thirty.
Matthew 13:9 He who has
ears, let him hear."

Matthew 13:10 Then the
disciples came and said to
him, "Why do you speak
to them in parables?"
Matthew 13:11 And he
answered them, "To you it
has been given to know the
secrets of the kingdom of
heaven, but to them it has
not been given.
Matthew 13:12 For to him
who has will more be
given, and he will have
abundance; but from him
who has not, even what he
has will be taken away.
Matthew 13:13 This is
why I speak to them in
parables, because seeing
they do not see, and
hearing they do not hear,
nor do they understand.
Matthew 13:14 With them
indeed is fulfilled the
prophecy of Isaiah which
says: 'You shall indeed
hear but never understand,
and you shall indeed see
but never perceive.
Matthew 13:15 For this
people's heart has grown
dull, and their ears are
heavy of hearing, and their
eyes they have closed, lest
they should perceive with
their eyes, and hear with
their ears, and understand
with their heart, and turn
for me to heal them.'
Matthew 13:16 But
blessed are your eyes, for
they see, and your ears, for
they hear.
Matthew 13:17 Truly, I
say to you, many prophets
and righteous men longed
to see what you see, and
did not see it, and to hear
what you hear, and did not
hear it.
Matthew 13:18 "Hear
then the parable of the
sower.
Matthew 13:19 When any
one hears the word of the
kingdom and does not
understand it, the evil one
comes and snatches away
what is sown in his heart;
this is what was sown
along the path.
Matthew 13:20 As for
what was sown on rocky
ground, this is he who
hears the word and
immediately receives it
with joy;
Matthew 13:21 yet he has
no root in himself, but
endures for a while, and
when tribulation or
persecution arises on
account of the word,
immediately he falls away.
Matthew 13:22 As for
what was sown among
thorns, this is he who hears
the word, but the cares of
the world and the delight
in riches choke the word,
and it proves unfruitful.
Matthew 13:23 As for
what was sown on good
soil, this is he who hears
the word and understands
it; he indeed bears fruit,
and yields, in one case a
hundredfold, in another
sixty, and in another
thirty."

Matthew 5:15 Nor do
men light a lamp and put it
under a bushel, but on a
stand, and it gives light to
all in the house.

Matthew 10:26 "So have
no fear of them; for
nothing is covered that will
not be revealed, or hidden
that will not be known.

Matthew 13:12 For to him
who has will more be
given, and he will have
abundance; but from him
who has not, even what he
has will be taken away.

Matthew 12:46 While he
was still speaking to the
people, behold, his mother
and his brothers stood
outside, asking to speak to
him.
Matthew 12:47
Matthew 12:48 But he
replied to the man who
told him, "Who is my
mother, and who are my
brothers?"
Matthew 12:49 And
stretching out his hand
toward his disciples, he
said, "Here are my mother
and my brothers!
Matthew 12:50 For
whoever does the will of
my Father in heaven is my
brother, and sister, and
mother."

Matthew 8:23 And when
he got into the boat, his
disciples followed him.
Matthew 8:24 And
behold, there arose a great
storm on the sea, so that
the boat was being
swamped by the waves;
but he was asleep.
Matthew 8:25 And they
went and woke him,
saying, "Save, Lord; we
are perishing."
Matthew 8:26 And he said
to them, "Why are you
afraid, O men of little
faith?" Then he rose and
rebuked the winds and the
sea; and there was a great
calm.
Matthew 8:27 And the
men marveled, saying,
"What sort of man is this,
that even winds and sea
obey him?"

Matthew 8:28 And when
he came to the other side,
to the country of the
Gadarenes, two demoniacs
met him, coming out of the
tombs, so fierce that no
one could pass that way.
Matthew 8:29 And
behold, they cried out,
"What have you to do with
us, O Son of God? Have
you come here to torment
us before the time?"
Matthew 8:30 Now a herd
of many swine was
feeding at some distance
from them.
Matthew 8:31 And the
demons begged him, "If
you cast us out, send us
away into the herd of
swine."
Matthew 8:32 And he said
to them, "Go." So they
came out and went into the
swine; and behold, the
whole herd rushed down
the steep bank into the sea,
and perished in the waters.
Matthew 8:33 The
herdsmen fled, and going
into the city they told
everything, and what had
happened to the
demoniacs.
Matthew 8:34 And
behold, all the city came
out to meet Jesus; and
when they saw him, they
begged him to leave their
neighborhood.

Matthew 9:18 While he
was thus speaking to them,
behold, a ruler came in and
knelt before him, saying,
"My daughter has just
died; but come and lay
your hand on her, and she
will live."
Matthew 9:19 And Jesus
rose and followed him,
with his disciples.
Matthew 9:20 And
behold, a woman who had
suffered from a
hemorrhage for twelve
years came up behind him
and touched the fringe of
his garment;
Matthew 9:21 for she said
to herself, "If I only touch
his garment, I shall be
made well."
Matthew 9:22 Jesus
turned, and seeing her he
said, "Take heart,
daughter; your faith has
made you well." And
instantly the woman was
made well.
Matthew 9:23 And when
Jesus came to the ruler's
house, and saw the flute
players, and the crowd
making a tumult,
Matthew 9:24 he said,
"Depart; for the girl is not
dead but sleeping." And
they laughed at him.
Matthew 9:25 But when
the crowd had been put
outside, he went in and
took her by the hand, and
the girl arose.
Matthew 9:26 And the
report of this went through
all that district.
