LUKE Chapter 20 1 One day, as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up 2 and said to him, "Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority." 3 He answered them, "I also will ask you a question; now tell me, 4 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?" 5 And they discussed it with one another, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why did you not believe him?' 6 But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us; for they are convinced that John was a prophet." 7 So they answered that they did not know whence it was. 8 And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things." 9 And he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country for a long while. 10 When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, that they should give him some of the fruit of the vineyard; but the tenants beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. 11 And he sent another servant; him also they beat and treated shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he sent yet a third; this one they wounded and cast out. 13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will respect him.' 14 But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.' 15 And they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those tenants, and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "God forbid!" 17 But he looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner'? 18 Every one who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but when it falls on any one it will crush him." 19 The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on him at that very hour, but they feared the people; for they perceived that he had told this parable against them. 20 So they watched him, and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might take hold of what he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. 21 They asked him, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God. 22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?" 23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, 24 "Show me a coin. Whose likeness and inscription has it?" They said, "Caesar's." 25 He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." 26 And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him by what he said; but marveling at his answer they were silent. 27 There came to him some Sadducees, those who say that there is no resurrection, 28 and they asked him a question, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the wife and raise up children for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and died without children; 30 and the second 31 and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32 Afterward the woman also died. 33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife." 34 And Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage; 35 but those who are accounted worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36 for they cannot die any more, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living; for all live to him." 39 And some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you have spoken well." 40 For they no longer dared to ask him any question. 41 But he said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is David's son? 42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, 'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, 43 till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet.' 44 David thus calls him Lord; so how is he his son?" 45 And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46 "Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and love salutations in the market places and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 47 who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." |

MARK Mark 11:27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, Mark 11:28 and they said to him, "By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?" Mark 11:29 Jesus said to them, "I will ask you a question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Mark 11:30 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men? Answer me." Mark 11:31 And they argued with one another, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?' Mark 11:32 But shall we say, 'From men'?" they were afraid of the people, for all held that John was a real prophet. Mark 11:33 So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things." Mark 12:1 And he began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a pit for the wine press, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. Mark 12:2 When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. Mark 12:3 And they took him and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. Mark 12:4 Again he sent to them another servant, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully. Mark 12:5 And he sent another, and him they killed; and so with many others, some they beat and some they killed. Mark 12:6 He had still one other, a beloved son; finally he sent him to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' Mark 12:7 But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' Mark 12:8 And they took him and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. Mark 12:9 What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants, and give the vineyard to others. Mark 12:10 Have you not read this scripture: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; Mark 12:11 this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?" Mark 12:12 And they tried to arrest him, but feared the multitude, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them; so they left him and went away. Mark 12:13 And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to entrap him in his talk. Mark 12:14 And they came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are true, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Mark 12:15 Should we pay them, or should we not?" But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, "Why put me to the test? Bring me a coin, and let me look at it." Mark 12:16 And they brought one. And he said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They said to him, "Caesar's." Mark 12:17 Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at him. Mark 12:18 And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection; and they asked him a question, saying, Mark 12:19 "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the wife, and raise up children for his brother. Mark 12:20 There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no children; Mark 12:21 and the second took her, and died, leaving no children; and the third likewise; Mark 12:22 and the seven left no children. Last of all the woman also died. Mark 12:23 In the resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife." Mark 12:24 Jesus said to them, "Is not this why you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God? Mark 12:25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. Mark 12:26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? Mark 12:27 He is not God of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong." Mark 12:35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, "How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? Mark 12:36 David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, declared, 'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet.' Mark 12:37 David himself calls him Lord; so how is he his son?" And the great throng heard him gladly. Mark 12:38 And in his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and to have salutations in the market places Mark 12:39 and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, Mark 12:40 who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." |

MATTHEW Matthew 21:23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" Matthew 21:24 Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you a question; and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. Matthew 21:25 The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven or from men?" And they argued with one another, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' Matthew 21:26 But if we say, 'From men,' we are afraid of the multitude; for all hold that John was a prophet." Matthew 21:27 So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. Matthew 21:33 "Hear another parable. There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. Matthew 21:34 When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; Matthew 21:35 and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Matthew 21:36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Matthew 21:37 Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' Matthew 21:38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' Matthew 21:39 And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Matthew 21:40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" Matthew 21:41 They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." Matthew 21:42 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'? Matthew 21:43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it." Matthew 21:44 Matthew 21:45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. Matthew 21:46 But when they tried to arrest him, they feared the multitudes, because they held him to be a prophet. Matthew 22:15 Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how to entangle him in his talk. Matthew 22:16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are true, and teach the way of God truthfully, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men. Matthew 22:17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" Matthew 22:18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Matthew 22:19 Show me the money for the tax." And they brought him a coin. Matthew 22:20 And Jesus said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" Matthew 22:21 They said, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." Matthew 22:22 When they heard it, they marveled; and they left him and went away. Matthew 22:23 The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection; and they asked him a question, Matthew 22:24 saying, "Teacher, Moses said, 'If a man dies, having no children, his brother must marry the widow, and raise up children for his brother.' Matthew 22:25 Now there were seven brothers among us; the first married, and died, and having no children left his wife to his brother. Matthew 22:26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. Matthew 22:27 After them all, the woman died. Matthew 22:28 In the resurrection, therefore, to which of the seven will she be wife? For they all had her." Matthew 22:29 But Jesus answered them, "You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God. Matthew 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. Matthew 22:31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, Matthew 22:32 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not God of the dead, but of the living." Matthew 22:33 And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching. Matthew 22:41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, Matthew 22:42 saying, "What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." Matthew 22:43 He said to them, "How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, Matthew 22:44 'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet'? Matthew 22:45 If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?" Matthew 22:46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did any one dare to ask him any more questions. Matthew 23:1 Then said Jesus to the crowds and to his disciples, Matthew 23:2 "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat; Matthew 23:3 so practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice. Matthew 23:4 They bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger. Matthew 23:5 They do all their deeds to be seen by men; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, Matthew 23:6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues, Matthew 23:7 and salutations in the market places, and being called rabbi by men. |
