THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELS COMPARED

The Gospel of Luke
Chapter 11

LUKE
Chapter 11

1 He was praying in a
certain place, and when he
ceased, one of his disciples
said to him, "Lord, teach
us to pray, as John taught
his disciples."

2 And he said to them,
"When you pray, say:
"Father, hallowed be thy
name. Thy kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our
daily bread;
4 and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive
every one who is indebted
to us; and lead us not into
temptation."

5 And he said to them,
"Which of you who has a
friend will go to him at
midnight and say to him,
'Friend, lend me three
loaves;
6 for a friend of mine has
arrived on a journey, and I
have nothing to set before
him';
7 and he will answer from
within, 'Do not bother me;
the door is now shut, and
my children are with me in
bed; I cannot get up and
give you anything'?
8 I tell you, though he
will not get up and give
him anything because he is
his friend, yet because of
his importunity he will rise
and give him whatever he
needs.

9 And I tell you, Ask, and
it will be given you; seek,
and you will find; knock,
and it will be opened to
you.
10 For every one who
asks receives, and he who
seeks finds, and to him
who knocks it will be
opened.
11 What father among
you, if his son asks for a
fish, will instead of a fish
give him a serpent;
12 or if he asks for an
egg, will give him a
scorpion?
13 If you then, who are
evil, know how to give
good gifts to your
children, how much more
will the heavenly Father
give the Holy Spirit to
those who ask him!"

14 Now he was casting
out a demon that was
dumb; when the demon
had gone out, the dumb
man spoke, and the people
marveled.
15 But some of them said,
"He casts out demons by
Beelzebul, the prince of
demons";

16 while others, to test
him, sought from him a
sign from heaven.

17 But he, knowing their
thoughts, said to them,
"Every kingdom divided
against itself is laid waste,
and a divided household
falls.
18 And if Satan also is
divided against himself,
how will his kingdom
stand? For you say that I
cast out demons by
Beelzebul.
19 And if I cast out
demons by Beelzebul, by
whom do your sons cast
them out? Therefore they
shall be your judges.
20 But if it is by the finger
of God that I cast out
demons, then the kingdom
of God has come upon
you.
21 When a strong man,
fully armed, guards his
own palace, his goods are
in peace;
22 but when one stronger
than he assails him and
overcomes him, he takes
away his armor in which
he trusted, and divides his
spoil.

23 He who is not with me
is against me, and he who
does not gather with me
scatters.

24 "When the unclean
spirit has gone out of a
man, he passes through
waterless places seeking
rest; and finding none he
says, 'I will return to my
house from which I came.'
25 And when he comes he
finds it swept and put in
order.
26 Then he goes and
brings seven other spirits
more evil than himself, and
they enter and dwell there;
and the last state of that
man becomes worse than
the first."

27 As he said this, a
woman in the crowd raised
her voice and said to him,
"Blessed is the womb that
bore you, and the breasts
that you sucked!"
28 But he said, "Blessed
rather are those who hear
the word of God and keep
it!"

29 When the crowds
were increasing, he began
to say, "This generation is
an evil generation; it seeks
a sign, but no sign shall be
given to it except the sign
of Jonah.
30 For as Jonah became a
sign to the men of
Nineveh, so will the Son
of man be to this
generation.
31 The queen of the South
will arise at the judgment
with the men of this
generation and condemn
them; for she came from
the ends of the earth to
hear the wisdom of
Solomon, and behold,
something greater than
Solomon is here.
32 The men of Nineveh
will arise at the judgment
with this generation and
condemn it; for they
repented at the preaching
of Jonah, and behold,
something greater than
Jonah is here.

33 "No one after lighting
a lamp puts it in a cellar or
under a bushel, but on a
stand, that those who enter
may see the light.

34 Your eye is the lamp
of your body; when your
eye is sound, your whole
body is full of light; but
when it is not sound, your
body is full of darkness.
35 Therefore be careful
lest the light in you be
darkness.

36 If then your whole
body is full of light, having
no part dark, it will be
wholly bright, as when a
lamp with its rays gives
you light."

37 While he was
speaking, a Pharisee asked
him to dine with him; so
he went in and sat at table.
38 The Pharisee was
astonished to see that he
did not first wash before
dinner.

39 And the Lord said to
him, "Now you Pharisees
cleanse the outside of the
cup and of the dish, but
inside you are full of
extortion and wickedness.

40 You fools! Did not he
who made the outside
make the inside also?
41 But give for alms those
things which are within;
and behold, everything is
clean for you.

42 "But woe to you
Pharisees! for you tithe
mint and rue and every
herb, and neglect justice
and the love of God; these
you ought to have done,
without neglecting the
others.

43 Woe to you Pharisees!
for you love the best seat
in the synagogues and
salutations in the market
places.

44 Woe to you! for you
are like graves which are
not seen, and men walk
over them without
knowing it."

45 One of the lawyers
answered him, "Teacher,
in saying this you reproach
us also."

46 And he said, "Woe to
you lawyers also! for you
load men with burdens
hard to bear, and you
yourselves do not touch
the burdens with one of
your fingers.

47 Woe to you! for you
build the tombs of the
prophets whom your
fathers killed.

48 So you are witnesses
and consent to the deeds of
your fathers; for they
killed them, and you build
their tombs.

49 Therefore also the
Wisdom of God said, 'I
will send them prophets
and apostles, some of
whom they will kill and
persecute,'
50 that the blood of all the
prophets, shed from the
foundation of the world,
may be required of this
generation,
51 from the blood of Abel
to the blood of Zechariah,
who perished between the
altar and the sanctuary.
Yes, I tell you, it shall be
required of this generation.

52 Woe to you lawyers!
for you have taken away
the key of knowledge; you
did not enter yourselves,
and you hindered those
who were entering."

53 As he went away from
there, the scribes and the
Pharisees began to press
him hard, and to provoke
him to speak of many
things,
54 lying in wait for him,
to catch at something he
might say.

MARK

Mark 3:22 And the
scribes who came down
from Jerusalem said, "He
is possessed by Beelzebul,
and by the prince of
demons he casts out the
demons."

Mark 8:11 The Pharisees
came and began to argue
with him, seeking from
him a sign from heaven, to
test him.

Mark 3:23 And he called
them to him, and said to
them in parables, "How
can Satan cast out Satan?
Mark 3:24 If a kingdom is
divided against itself, that
kingdom cannot stand.
Mark 3:25 And if a house
is divided against itself,
that house will not be able
to stand.
Mark 3:26 And if Satan
has risen up against
himself and is divided, he
cannot stand, but is
coming to an end.
Mark 3:27 But no one can
enter a strong man's house
and plunder his goods,
unless he first binds the
strong man; then indeed he
may plunder his house.

Mark 9:40 For he that is
not against us is for us.

Mark 4:21 And he said
to them, "Is a lamp
brought in to be put under
a bushel, or under a bed,
and not on a stand?

Mark 7:3 (For the
Pharisees, and all the
Jews, do not eat unless
they wash their hands,
observing the tradition of
the elders;

Mark 12:38 And in his
teaching he said, "Beware
of the scribes, who like to
go about in long robes, and
to have salutations in the
market places

Mark 12:13 And they
sent to him some of the
Pharisees and some of the
Herodians, to entrap him
in his talk.

MATTHEW

Matthew 6:9 Pray then
like this: Our Father who
art in heaven, Hallowed be
thy name.
Matthew 6:10 Thy
kingdom come. Thy will
be done, On earth as it is
in heaven.
Matthew 6:11 Give us this
day our daily bread;
Matthew 6:12 And
forgive us our debts, As
we also have forgiven our
debtors;
Matthew 6:13 And lead
us not into temptation, But
deliver us from evil.

Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it
will be given you; seek,
and you will find; knock,
and it will be opened to
you.
Matthew 7:8 For every
one who asks receives, and
he who seeks finds, and to
him who knocks it will be
opened.
Matthew 7:9 Or what man
of you, if his son asks him
for bread, will give him a
stone?
Matthew 7:10 Or if he
asks for a fish, will give
him a serpent?
Matthew 7:11 If you then,
who are evil, know how to
give good gifts to your
children, how much more
will your Father who is in
heaven give good things to
those who ask him!

Matthew 9:33 And when
the demon had been cast
out, the dumb man spoke;
and the crowds marveled,
saying, "Never was
anything like this seen in
Israel."
Matthew 9:34 But the
Pharisees said, "He casts
out demons by the prince
of demons."
Matthew 12:22 Then a
blind and dumb demoniac
was brought to him, and he
healed him, so that the
dumb man spoke and saw.
Matthew 12:24 But when
the Pharisees heard it they
said, "It is only by
Beelzebul, the prince of
demons, that this man
casts out demons."

Matthew 12:38 Then
some of the scribes and
Pharisees said to him,
"Teacher, we wish to see a
sign from you."
Matthew 16:1 And the
Pharisees and Sadducees
came, and to test him they
asked him to show them a
sign from heaven.

Matthew 12:25 Knowing
their thoughts, he said to
them, "Every kingdom
divided against itself is
laid waste, and no city or
house divided against itself
will stand;
Matthew 12:26 and if
Satan casts out Satan, he is
divided against himself;
how then will his kingdom
stand?
Matthew 12:27 And if I
cast out demons by
Beelzebul, by whom do
your sons cast them out?
Therefore they shall be
your judges.
Matthew 12:28 But if it is
by the Spirit of God that I
cast out demons, then the
kingdom of God has come
upon you.
Matthew 12:29 Or how
can one enter a strong
man's house and plunder
his goods, unless he first
binds the strong man?
Then indeed he may
plunder his house.

Matthew 12:30 He who is
not with me is against me,
and he who does not
gather with me scatters.

Matthew 12:43 "When the
unclean spirit has gone out
of a man, he passes
through waterless places
seeking rest, but he finds
none.
Matthew 12:44 Then he
says, 'I will return to my
house from which I came.'
And when he comes he
finds it empty, swept, and
put in order.
Matthew 12:45 Then he
goes and brings with him
seven other spirits more
evil than himself, and they
enter and dwell there; and
the last state of that man
becomes worse than the
first. So shall it be also
with this evil generation."

Matthew 12:39 But he
answered them, "An evil
and adulterous generation
seeks for a sign; but no
sign shall be given to it
except the sign of the
prophet Jonah.
Matthew 12:40 For as
Jonah was three days and
three nights in the belly of
the whale, so will the Son
of man be three days and
three nights in the heart of
the earth.
Matthew 12:41 The men
of Nineveh will arise at the
judgment with this
generation and condemn it;
for they repented at the
preaching of Jonah, and
behold, something greater
than Jonah is here.
Matthew 12:42 The queen
of the South will arise at
the judgment with this
generation and condemn it;
for she came from the ends
of the earth to hear the
wisdom of Solomon, and
behold, something greater
than Solomon is here.

Matthew 5:15 Nor do
men light a lamp and put it
under a bushel, but on a
stand, and it gives light to
all in the house.

Matthew 6:22 "The eye is
the lamp of the body. So,
if your eye is sound, your
whole body will be full of
light;
Matthew 6:23 but if your
eye is not sound, your
whole body will be full of
darkness. If then the light
in you is darkness, how
great is the darkness!

Matthew 15:2 "Why do
your disciples transgress
the tradition of the elders?
For they do not wash their
hands when they eat."

Matthew 23:25 "Woe to
you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for you cleanse
the outside of the cup and
of the plate, but inside they
are full of extortion and
rapacity.

Matthew 23:23 "Woe to
you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for you tithe
mint and dill and cummin,
and have neglected the
weightier matters of the
law, justice and mercy and
faith; these you ought to
have done, without
neglecting the others.

Matthew 23:6 and they
love the place of honor at
feasts and the best seats in
the synagogues,

Matthew 23:27 "Woe to
you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for you are
like whitewashed tombs,
which outwardly appear
beautiful, but within they
are full of dead men's
bones and all uncleanness.

Matthew 23:4 They bind
heavy burdens, hard to
bear, and lay them on
men's shoulders; but they
themselves will not move
them with their finger.

Matthew 23:29 "Woe to
you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for you build
the tombs of the prophets
and adorn the monuments
of the righteous,

Matthew 23:30 saying, 'If
we had lived in the days of
our fathers, we would not
have taken part with them
in shedding the blood of
the prophets.'
Matthew 23:31 Thus you
witness against yourselves,
that you are sons of those
who murdered the
prophets.

Matthew 23:34
Therefore I send you
prophets and wise men and
scribes, some of whom
you will kill and crucify,
and some you will scourge
in your synagogues and
persecute from town to
town,
Matthew 23:35 that upon
you may come all the
righteous blood shed on
earth, from the blood of
innocent Abel to the blood
of Zechariah the son of
Barachiah, whom you
murdered between the
sanctuary and the altar.
Matthew 23:36 Truly, I
say to you, all this will
come upon this generation.

Matthew 23:13 "But woe
to you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites!
because you shut the
kingdom of heaven against
men; for you neither enter
yourselves, nor allow
those who would enter to
go in.
