Currency Calculator is a software program designed to perform conversions between 55 different currencies using the daily nominal noon exchange rates.

The various forms of money to be converted are selected using the 'From' and 'To' drop down boxes at the bottom of the program interface. A value can be entered into the text box on the upper left using the key board, the number buttons, or by right clicking on the text area to bring up a pop up menu, and then using the copy and paste method. Pressing the Enter key, or the Enter button, or clicking an item on one of the drop down lists signals the program to perform the conversion and the new monetary amount is then displayed in the text area on the upper right of the interface.

Items can be quickly located on the drop down list by using the Quick Find alphabet key set. Pressing the 'From' button and choosing a key will quickly locate the first item beginning with the letter on the face of the key on the list of items to be converted from (the source), while pressing the 'To' button and then selecting a letter button, will accomplish the same task on the list of items to be converted to (the target).

The nominal exchange rate is the rate of exchange between the different forms of money before service charges are added by banks or financial institutions. These fees average around 4 percent, and the end result of the exchange transaction is known as the cash rate (the amount of money you actually receive). For this reason the check box for the cash rate is checked by default, and the value is set to 4. If your financial institution is charging a different discount rate, you can enter the value into the cash rate text box.

The program relies upon data downloaded from the internet through the Bank of Canada, and for this reason, since the data set is bilingual, an option has been included to toggle the data set between English and French, with English selected as the default value. (Note that while this program relies on data from the Bank of Canada, this software is not in any way affliated with the Bank of Canada, etc., etc., yada, yada, yada).

Data is usually available for the program to download by around 2 PM Eastern Time, Monday to Friday, and the program can be configured to automatically download the days data after startup, or the download can be started manually by pressing the Download button. The text area beside the download button displays the date of the last valid download of currency information over the internet.

Pressing the Options button brings up a screen that allows control of a few simple program commands. You can choose to automatically download the currency information by checking the appropriate box (note that automatic downloads only take place upon program start up, when the clock and the date both indicate that a download would be required. Unchecking this box will enable the download button for manual downloading of the up to date currency information. If the time is incorrect for the program to automate the download process the download button will be enabled. If the data is up to date, the download button will be disabled by the program.

The program can display results in two formats. Currency format includes a dollar sign, and commas are used, to make the read out human friendly. If you require output that can be copied and pasted into another computer application, then you can choose to display the result uin Number format by checking the appropriate button on the Options window. Numbers can also be rounded to the nearest cent, or displayed with the entire decimal portion intact.

On the Options window you will also find a button to bring up help (this file), visit the original software web site, send email, or add items to the Startup menu, the desktop or the quick launch tool bar at the bottom of your screen.

The software depends upon data downloaded from the internet. If the dataset changes in a major way, then the program would need to be updated to match the new dataset, and until it is probable that the program will not function correctly. You can use the Software button on the Options page to check for an updated version of the program, or the Email button to send correspondance concerning the problem.
