Iranian clerics attempt to blame student protests on CIA

The current student protests are merely the continuation of past protests, like those of 1999 that were violently repressed. The following BBC story looks back at the debate in the Iranian media over the violent response to the 1999 student protests

Drought Breaks in Iran

The following is the most recent News Bulletin issued by Iran Press Service On Sunday October 7th:

URGENT US AND UK ATTACK AFGHANISTAN

PARIS 7 Oct. (IPS) The United States and Britain have started attacks on Afghanistan, CNN reported, confirmed by the US Defence Department.First information coming from the region say explosions were heard in both Kabol, the Afghan capital and inQandahar, where lives Mollah Mohammad Akhound, the Taleban supreme leader.Forces of the anti-Taleban Northern Alliance have also launched heavy attacks against Taleban positions, according to the reports.A Northern Alliance had said that the US had told them to stop flights and urge people in Kabol and other majorAfghan cities to evacuate all places near military bases and airports. ENDS ATTACK ON AFGHANISTAN 71001

While there is much spin doctoring going on in the press that 'Bin Laden confessed' Reuters gives a more unbiased interpretation of the speech. Bin Laden appears to think that Palestinians did it, but then he doesn't know anymore than anyone else apparently. He says that 'those muslims' and 'God' did it. (See the link below for his previous interview on the subject). Reuters report on Bin Laden speech - "DUBAI (Reuters) - The world's most wanted man, Osama bin Laden, issued a dramatic videotaped statement on Sunday praising the September 11 suicide-hijackers and said America would not live in peace until Palestinians could do the same. Bin Laden, calling President Bush the "head of the infidels," expressed support for the attack on targets in New York and Washington that killed about 6,000 people. "America has been filled with horror from north to south and east to west, and thanks be to God what America is tasting now is only a copy of what we have tasted," bin Laden said in his first verified statement since the attacks. "Our Islamic nation has been tasting the same for more 80 years," he said in a statement transmitted just two hours after the United States and Britain began bombing Afghanistan. His statement to Qatar's al-Jazeera television, filmed against a rocky background with an assault rifle at his side, did not claim responsibility for the September 11 attacks. He has previously issued statements through associates denying he was behind them. "

Also of interest the Tehran times article Historians reveal ploy to prepare public for war reminds us all of the false story of babies being thrown out of incubators that was spread around to help 'prepare the public' for the attack on Iraq. "In conclusion, Nickley said, "presently, the same old ploy is being used in the case of Osama Bin Laden, and we don't know how much of the story we should believe. The fact is that the media expect us to trust them, but their record shows that at times they have betrayed our trust."

Mouth Fatwa -

Earlier this month, I tried to manipulate the situation by forcing everything to conclude by Yom Kippur, and got as a prize 'a mouth Fatwa' (which means a really painfully sore mouth) which seems to have subsided now that Yom Kippur is upon us, allowing me to speak again. This is not the first time I have gone over the top when confronted with something unbelievably atrocious, but hopefully it will be the last. I also made the mistake of predicting the intervention and calling of China when the right country was Iran. Well, life goes on...

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and so here are a thousand words for you to consider...

Bodies Equal Results as Colombia Struggles to Show Gains in Decades-Old War

SAN JOSE DEL GUAVIARE, Colombia (AP) - Sheets covering the rebel bodies were supposed to lend decency to an otherwise grisly scene, but a sour stench filled the tropical air, flies buzzed hungrily and bloodstains had seeped through the cloth.

A foot, gray and twisted at an odd angle, jutted from under one of the aqua green hospital sheets.

A general's aide bounded out to meet a group of journalists, who had been flown out from the capital to witness the corpses.

"Would you like me to take off the covers," he asked. "Some of them are just children, with faces like babies."

Showing rebel bodies is an ugly ritual of Colombia's decades-old war.

US Commandos are in Afghanistan (Friday September 28, 2001)

According to the Hindustan times, ""Their orders are to capture or kill bin Laden or pin him down until US airstrikes can be launched, officials told the newspaper. Neither Pakistan nor the United States has officially acknowledged that commandos are inside Afghanistan, but the US daily (USA Today) said their arrival and deployment have been reported by English- and Urdu-language newspapers in Pakistan. US Army Green Berets are involved in the search, along with Navy SEAL commandos and members of the British Army's Special Air Services, unnamed US officials told USA Today."

A prophecy concerning Iran from Isaiah

Drought breaks in Central America, and the first signs of relief for Iran. Also Is Eden blooming?

- There also seems to have been a breaking of drought in Sri Lanka, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Somalia, Iran and Afghanistan still require drought relief. Forecast for the second week of October is rain all across Somalia, while the Iranian forecast is mixed.

China was also suffering the worst drought this century this summer. As reported in the Washington Post "BAIYANGDIAN, China -- China is suffering its worst drought in more than two decades, with crops in huge tracts of the north and southwest withering in parched fields, cities imposing emergency restrictions on water use and rivers becoming dusty gullies. The drought, which stretches across 17 provinces and has lasted more than 100 days, has left 23 million people short of drinking water and damaged more than 73 million acres of farmland. Herds of cattle and sheep are dying of dehydration, and peasants are abandoning their land to search for work in factories and mines." I have not been able to locate information on whether or not the Chinese drought has broken, however an examination of satellite images of the last week or so indicates that the Chinese drought has more than likely broken based on the large, cold cloud banks that the satellites reveal moving into the country. In the following real media file you can see drought relief coming to Somalia (the pointy 'horn' of Africa under the Arabian desert) and you can also see the clouds building up over China (the top right of the image). The latest satellite images show increasing water vapor and cloud cover building up over Iran and Afghanistan, so perhaps drought relief is coming there shortly as well.

Cloud cover buildup Iran October 7, 2001

The buildup has been getting denser over the course of the week and this makes me optimistic that Iran and Afghanistan are well on the way to getting some drought relief and joining the list of countries that I have been tracking that have been getting drought relief. (Pray for rain if you are the type of person who prays.) Iran, by the way is under the Caspian sea on the far right of the images above.

Pakistani newspaper prints interview with bin Laden

- "The Al-Qa'idah group had nothing to do with the 11 September attacks on the USA, according to Usamah Bin-Ladin in an interview with the Pakistani paper Ummat. Usamah Bin-Ladin went on to suggest that Jews or US secret services were behind the attacks, and to express gratitude and support for Pakistan, urging Pakistan's people to jihad against the West. The following is the text of an interview conducted by a "special correspondent", published Pakistani newspaper Ummat on 28 September, place and date of interview not given. The first paragraph is Ummat's introduction." In regards to his statement on the 7th of October which reporters are calling 'a confession' what I heard him say is that 'those muslims' and 'God' did it...

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) Oct. 1, 2001 - Iran's Defense Minister warned the United States not to use Iranian airspace for an attack on neighboring Afghanistan, saying Monday that Tehran will react "strongly" if its skies are violated. "We will strongly defend our airspace and will confront (U.S.) planes if they use our airspace," Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani said at a news conference ... However, the United States could launch an attack on Afghanistan without violating Iranian airspace, sending forces from Pakistan, from warships in the Arabian Sea or from Central Asia.

The Saharawis - forgotten war, forgotten refugees

- After refusing to turn to terrorism or kidnapping to publicize their cause, the Saharawi refugees are forgotten by the world.

Pravda, the Russian paper, reported on another suicide bombing, directed by the CIA on September 11th, but this one was almost 30 years ago in Chile...11th September - "The 11th September…a calm day. Just another day. Suddenly, and with a shocking coldness, death descended from the sky. The building shook as the aircraft slammed into it, callously sowing death and panic and injury. But this was not New York. It was the Presidential Palace in Santiago del Chile. The year, 1973. The venue: the CIA-backed coup d’etat of Pinochet against Allende."
