Due to droughts and civil unrest, the United Nations has 33 nations listed as having famine victims in them this fall. Countries like Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are under threat of repeating the terrible Ukranian famine of the 30s (although for different reasons ... the Ukranians were deliberately starved to death by Stalin). The situation is also dire in Afghanistan, also suffering from over 3 years of terrible drought, with close to 7 and half million people now under threat, with close to a million and half under severe threat of death by starvation in the coming days due to the war and the inability to supply relief. The following is the latest press release issued by the United Nations on the starvation threat facing citizens of 33 countries this fall and winter, that appeared on the AllAfrica.com newswire...

Action Needed Now to Avert Starvation

Feeding programmes to assist the poor should beginsoon to prevent starvation, and possible death, by theend of the year, World Vision relief manager forMalawi, Elton Ntwana, warned on Wednesday. Hiswarning followed the release of a World Vision nutritionsurvey conducted in part of the Machinga District from2-8 October. The survey, using a height-for-ageformula, found a global acute malnutrition rate of 31.8percent among children between six months and fiveyears old.

"If people will only act when the malnutrition rate isvery high, children will die. If any assistance is needed,programmes should start now so that by Decemberpeople can get food," Ntwana told IRIN. According tothe survey, about 75 percent of respondents at theNayuchi Area Development Programme in Machinga,where the survey was conducted, had no foodreserves. Only 20.8 percent had food until December.


As well, since this week is the religious right's 'White Ribbon Campaign' against pornography, and since I have protested the misinformation being tolerated by Christian media on the so called 'global world wide food shortage' I also continue my own White Ribbon Campaign against 'Child porno' by posting the following protest...While it is commonly asserted by the religious right that 'prostitutes, tax collectors, and sinners are responsible for 'the decline of the nation' and 'bringing down God's wrath' this persecution demonstrates a blindness to some of the real causes of suffering on earth and shows a lack of common sense at a time like this...You might recall that blitz of attacks on prostitutes, tax collectors and sinners that predictably came spewing out of the religious right in the days right after the September 11th disasters, this 'swallowing a camel' seeming to endemic to this particular expression of religion (obssessed with 'criminal orgasms' a relatively victimless crime, although there are legitimate concerns about the exploitation of people for sexual favors in exchange for money or even simple survival...nevertheless to constantly be attacking prostitutes as 'ruining the nation for everyone' by 'bringing down the wrath of God on the nation' is idiotically myopic and downright offensive, in particular when real sinning goes on and goes by uncommented upon, injustice, inequality and oppression and disinformation apparently being sins that do not bother preachers as much as the thought of someone having a 'criminal orgasm' of any kind (there being so many illegal and wicked types of orgasms that are the main obbesssion of the religious right as my viewing of Christian television this morning indicates). Last week it was the United Campaign against 'the Harry Potter books'. This week it is more ranting about 'illegal orgasms' in particular those caused by those terrible terrible prostitutes, another hour of air time is being wasted by Christian television everyday ranting about 'devil possession' as one of the most serious threats to America these days, and it just goes on and on and on as one of the most odiously disgusting offenses I have had to endure over years and years and years of protest and actions I have been invovled with specifically in regards to the churches and to that Christian television and that religious right that completely dominates the airwaves. So therefore...
