Sparse rains and an unprecented drought in Canada and similar conditions developing in the United States bring to mind the potential for conditions that resemble the 'dirty thirties'. The first panel in the above graphic is the 'vegetation greenness index.' Beside it on the right is the 'relative greenness index' which shows how much the current greenness deviates from the average. On the left side of the second row is the 'deviation' another type of measurement of deviation from standard greenness. The panel on the right shows the low relative humidity on October 25, and the panel on the last row on the left shows the low relative humidity on November 3. The panel on the bottom right is the windchill/temperature chart for just after sunrise on November the sixth, and shows how a cold air mass has been hovering over the continent, with the exception of Florida, currently in the early ripening stages of the fruit harvest (something that also concerns me) and parts of California are also spared at the moment.

As well the Weather Channel reports that Wildfires rage in dry states from Maine to Alabama ... "given the region's low rainfall, wind, freezes and fallen leaves." In North Carolina rainfall has been "21 inches below normal for the entire year," while other areas are from 3 to 6 inches below normal. "Flames have consumed tens of thousands of acres from Maine to Alabama. It's the same part of the country that's dealing with below-average rainfall this season." Speaking of the South Carolina fire, ""On a scale of one to 10, this is a nine," said Henry Bell, a ranger with the state forestry commission. "This fire is going to be bad. We're not going to control it any time soon." The forecast remains dry for most of the country and on November 9th, the wildfire alert is also in effect for Montana..

As well Columbia River salmon are suffering from summer drought. "Though the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) managed to continue providing power at reasonable rates throughout the drought-ridden summer, it didn't come without an ecological price. The percentage of juvenile steelhead surviving the trip from McNary to Bonneville Dam dwindled by about 50 percent, while survival rates of juvenile chinook dropped by about 10 percent, a significant blow to the already endangered fish runs. The BPA declared a power emergency this past summer, which enabled federal dam managers to sidestep an annual commitment to boost flows to speed fish on their way to the ocean."
