| Below I have reproduced an entry (one of hundreds) from the error log file of my website, and every entry like this one is from one of the variants of the Code Red Virus. The virus attempts to cause a buffer overrun with the string of 'N's or sometimes 'X' so that it can then install and run the code which follows the string (by overflowing the buffer it can overwrite program area in the code and install executable virus code). This web hosting company does not use Microsoft software, and so the virus has not been able to do anything other than to clog everyone's error log files with its vain attempts to overflow the buffer. As well my firewall is constantly firing off when I am online, since the Code Red Virus does not know if my IP address is a home computer or a web server. (You are not vulnerable to Code Red unless you are running Windows NT or 2000 on a personal computer or are running unpatched Microsoft webserver software). Nevertheless if you do not have a firewall you are vulnerable to constant hacker scans. You can download a highly praised (and free) firewall from Zone Alarm by following this link. It hardly seems coincidental to have my firewall firing off all the time, all day long, and these constant hits taking place on my webserver from Code Red as well. Hopefully those running Microsoft IIs Webserver software will patch and reboot their compromised systems (and hopefully in the future all computer programmers will remember that whenever they program for a buffer they include a check for buffer overruns as a matter of course!)
