1 Kings Chapter 2 1 When David's time to die drew near, he charged Solomon his son, saying, 2 "I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, 3 and keep the charge of YAHWEH your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his ordinances, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn; 4 that YAHWEH may establish his word which he spoke concerning me, saying, 'If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail you a man on the throne of Israel.' 5 "Moreover you know also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, how he dealt with the two commanders of the armies of Israel, Abner the son of Ner, and Amasa the son of Jether, whom he murdered, avenging in time of peace blood which had been shed in war, and putting innocent blood upon the girdle about my loins, and upon the sandals on my feet. 6 Act therefore according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace. 7 But deal loyally with the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table; for with such loyalty they met me when I fled from Absalom your brother. 8 And there is also with you Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse on the day when I went to Mahanaim; but when he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by YAHWEH, saying, 'I will not put you to death with the sword.' 9 Now therefore hold him not guiltless, for you are a wise man; you will know what you ought to do to him, and you shall bring his gray head down with blood to Sheol." 10 Then David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David. 11 And the time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. 12 So Solomon sat upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was firmly established. 13 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, "Do you come peaceably?" He said, "Peaceably." 14 Then he said, "I have something to say to you." She said, "Say on." 15 He said, "You know that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel fully expected me to reign; however the kingdom has turned about and become my brother's, for it was his from YAHWEH. 16 And now I have one request to make of you; do not refuse me." She said to him, "Say on." 17 And he said, "Pray ask King Solomon he will not refuse you to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife." 18 Bathsheba said, "Very well; I will speak for you to the king." 19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon, to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. And the king rose to meet her, and bowed down to her; then he sat on his throne, and had a seat brought for the king's mother; and she sat on his right. 20 Then she said, "I have one small request to make of you; do not refuse me." And the king said to her, "Make your request, my mother; for I will not refuse you." 21 She said, "Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as his wife." 22 King Solomon answered his mother, "And why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also; for he is my elder brother, and on his side are Abiathar the priest and Joab the son of Zeruiah." 23 Then King Solomon swore by YAHWEH, saying, "God do so to me and more also if this word does not cost Adonijah his life! 24 Now therefore as YAHWEH lives, who has established me, and placed me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day." 25 So King Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he struck him down, and he died. 26 And to Abiathar the priest the king said, "Go to Anathoth, to your estate; for you deserve death. But I will not at this time put you to death, because you bore the ark of YAHWEH GOD before David my father, and because you shared in all the affliction of my father." 27 So Solomon expelled Abiathar from being priest to YAHWEH, thus fulfilling the word of YAHWEH which he had spoken concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh. 28 When the news came to Joab for Joab had supported Adonijah although he had not supported Absalom Joab fled to the tent of YAHWEH and caught hold of the horns of the altar. 29 And when it was told King Solomon, "Joab has fled to the tent of YAHWEH, and behold, he is beside the altar," Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, "Go, strike him down." 30 So Benaiah came to the tent of YAHWEH, and said to him, "The king commands, 'Come forth.'" But he said, "No, I will die here." Then Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, "Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me." 31 The king replied to him, "Do as he has said, strike him down and bury him; and thus take away from me and from my father's house the guilt for the blood which Joab shed without cause. 32 YAHWEH will bring back his bloody deeds upon his own head, because, without the knowledge of my father David, he attacked and slew with the sword two men more righteous and better than himself, Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah. 33 So shall their blood come back upon the head of Joab and upon the head of his descendants for ever; but to David, and to his descendants, and to his house, and to his throne, there shall be peace from YAHWEH for evermore." 34 Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and struck him down and killed him; and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness. 35 The king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada over the army in place of Joab, and the king put Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar. 36 Then the king sent and summoned Shimei, and said to him, "Build yourself a house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and do not go forth from there to any place whatever. 37 For on the day you go forth, and cross the brook Kidron, know for certain that you shall die; your blood shall be upon your own head." 38 And Shimei said to the king, "What you say is good; as my lord the king has said, so will your servant do." So Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days. 39 But it happened at the end of three years that two of Shimei's slaves ran away to Achish, son of Maacah, king of Gath. And when it was told Shimei, "Behold, your slaves are in Gath," 40 Shimei arose and saddled an ass, and went to Gath to Achish, to seek his slaves; Shimei went and brought his slaves from Gath. 41 And when Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and returned, 42 the king sent and summoned Shimei, and said to him, "Did I not make you swear by YAHWEH, and solemnly admonish you, saying, 'Know for certain that on the day you go forth and go to any place whatever, you shall die'? And you said to me, 'What you say is good; I obey.' 43 Why then have you not kept your oath to YAHWEH and the commandment with which I charged you?" 44 The king also said to Shimei, "You know in your own heart all the evil that you did to David my father; so YAHWEH will bring back your evil upon your own head. 45 But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before YAHWEH for ever." 46 Then the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out and struck him down, and he died. So the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon. |

Samuel 2 Samuel 7:25 And now, O LORD God, confirm for ever the word which thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house, and do as thou hast spoken; 2 Samuel 2:13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. 2 Samuel 3:27 And when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him privately, and there he smote him in the belly, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. 2 Samuel 20:10 But Amasa did not observe the sword which was in Joab's hand; so Joab struck him with it in the body, and shed his bowels to the ground, without striking a second blow; and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. 2 Samuel 17:28 brought beds, basins, and earthen vessels, wheat, barley, meal, parched grain, beans and lentils, 2 Samuel 17:29 honey and curds and sheep and cheese from the herd, for David and the people with him to eat; for they said, "The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness." 2 Samuel 19:31 Now Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim; and he went on with the king to the Jordan, to escort him over the Jordan. 2 Samuel 19:32 Barzillai was a very aged man, eighty years old; and he had provided the king with food while he stayed at Mahanaim; for he was a very wealthy man. 2 Samuel 19:33 And the king said to Barzillai, "Come over with me, and I will provide for you with me in Jerusalem." 2 Samuel 19:34 But Barzillai said to the king, "How many years have I still to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? 2 Samuel 19:35 I am this day eighty years old; can I discern what is pleasant and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or what he drinks? Can I still listen to the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king? 2 Samuel 19:36 Your servant will go a little way over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king recompense me with such a reward? 2 Samuel 19:37 Pray let your servant return, that I may die in my own city, near the grave of my father and my mother. But here is your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do for him whatever seems good to you." 2 Samuel 19:38 And the king answered, "Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do for him whatever seems good to you; and all that you desire of me I will do for you." 2 Samuel 16:5 When King David came to Bahurim, there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; and as he came he cursed continually. 2 Samuel 16:6 And he threw stones at David, and at all the servants of King David; and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. 2 Samuel 16:7 And Shimei said as he cursed, "Begone, begone, you man of blood, you worthless fellow! 2 Samuel 16:8 YAHWEH has avenged upon you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned; and YAHWEH has given the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. See, your ruin is on you; for you are a man of blood." 2 Samuel 19:18 and they crossed the ford to bring over the king's household, and to do his pleasure. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he was about to cross the Jordan, 2 Samuel 19:19 and said to the king, "Let not my lord hold me guilty or remember how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem; let not the king bear it in mind. 2 Samuel 19:20 For your servant knows that I have sinned; therefore, behold, I have come this day, the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king." 2 Samuel 19:21 Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered, "Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed YAHWEH's anointed?" 2 Samuel 19:22 But David said, "What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be as an adversary to me? Shall any one be put to death in Israel this day? For do I not know that I am this day king over Israel?" 2 Samuel 19:23 And the king said to Shimei, "You shall not die." And the king gave him his oath. 2 Samuel 5:4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 2 Samuel 5:5 At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years. 2 Samuel 15:24 And Abiathar came up, and lo, Zadok came also, with all the Levites, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; and they set down the ark of God, until the people had all passed out of the city. 2 Samuel 15:25 Then the king said to Zadok, "Carry the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the eyes of YAHWEH, he will bring me back and let me see both it and his habitation; 2 Samuel 15:26 but if he says, 'I have no pleasure in you,' behold, here I am, let him do to me what seems good to him." 2 Samuel 15:27 The king also said to Zadok the priest, "Look, go back to the city in peace, you and Abiathar, with your two sons, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. 2 Samuel 15:28 See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness, until word comes from you to inform me." 2 Samuel 15:29 So Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem; and they remained there. 1 Samuel 22:20 But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 1 Samuel 22:21 And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of YAHWEH. 1 Samuel 22:22 And David said to Abiathar, "I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father's house. 1 Samuel 22:23 Stay with me, fear not; for he that seeks my life seeks your life; with me you shall be in safekeeping." 1 Samuel 23:8 And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. 1 Samuel 23:9 David knew that Saul was plotting evil against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, "Bring the ephod here." 1 Samuel 2:27 And there came a man of God to Eli, and said to him, "Thus YAHWEH has said, 'I revealed myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh. 1 Samuel 2:28 And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me; and I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. 1 Samuel 2:29 Why then look with greedy eye at my sacrifices and my offerings which I commanded, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves upon the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?' 1 Samuel 2:30 Therefore YAHWEH the God of Israel declares: 'I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me for ever'; but now YAHWEH declares: 'Far be it from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 1 Samuel 2:31 Behold, the days are coming, when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 1 Samuel 2:32 Then in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity which shall be bestowed upon Israel; and there shall not be an old man in your house for ever. 1 Samuel 2:33 The man of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep out his eyes and grieve his heart; and all the increase of your house shall die by the sword of men. 1 Samuel 2:34 And this which shall befall your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die on the same day. 1 Samuel 2:35 And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind; and I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed for ever. 1 Samuel 2:36 And every one who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread, and shall say, "Put me, I pray you, in one of the priest's places, that I may eat a morsel of bread."'" 2 Samuel 17:25 Now Absalom had set Amasa over the army instead of Joab. Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra the Ishmaelite, who had married Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab's mother. 2 Samuel 3:27 And when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him privately, and there he smote him in the belly, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. 2 Samuel 20:9 And Joab said to Amasa, "Is it well with you, my brother?" And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. 2 Samuel 20:10 But Amasa did not observe the sword which was in Joab's hand; so Joab struck him with it in the body, and shed his bowels to the ground, without striking a second blow; and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. 2 Samuel 3:29 May it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all his father's house; and may the house of Joab never be without one who has a discharge, or who is leprous, or who holds a spindle, or who is slain by the sword, or who lacks bread!" 2 Samuel 16:5 When King David came to Bahurim, there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; and as he came he cursed continually. 1 Samuel 25:39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, "Blessed be YAHWEH who has avenged the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from evil; YAHWEH has returned the evil-doing of Nabal upon his own head." Then David sent and wooed Abigail, to make her his wife. 2 Samuel 7:13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. |
