THE GOSPEL OF THOMAS COMPARED
TO THE GOSPELS IN THE CANON

VERSES 31 TO 66

The Gospel of Thomas

31 Yeshua said,
"A prophet is not popular in a prophet's
home town, and a doctor does not heal
family or friends."

32 Yeshua said, "A city set and fortified
upon a high hill cannot fall nor be hidden."

33 Yeshua said, "Preach from your roofs
what you hear in your ear. For no one lights
a lamp only to put it under a basket, nor does
anyone keep it hidden in a corner. Rather,
one puts it on a stand so everyone who
comes in will see its light."

34 Yeshua said, "If one blind person leads
another blind person, both of them will fall
into the pit."

35 Yeshua said, "One cannot enter the house
of a strong person and storm it by force
without first tying the owner's hands. Then
the house can be looted."

36 Yeshua said, "Do not worry, from
morning to evening about what you will
wear."

37 His disciples said, "When will you appear
to us, and when will we see you?"
Yeshua said, "When you strip and are not
embarrassed, and you take your clothes and
trample them under your feet like little
children, then you will see the Child of the
Living God and you will not be afraid."

38 Yeshua said, "You have often longed to
hear these things that I am telling you, and
you have no one else from whom to hear
them. The days are coming when you will
seek me but will not find me."

39 Yeshua said, "The scribes and the
Pharisees have taken the keys of knowledge
and have hidden them. They have not gone in
themselves, and have they prevented those
who want to enter from doing so. So you
must be as clever as snakes and as innocent
as doves."

40 Yeshua said, "A vine has been planted
away from the Living One. Because it is
unhealthy, it will be pulled up by its roots
and destroyed."

41 Yeshua said, "Anyone who already has
something in their hand will be given more,
and anyone who has nothing will lose even
the little that they have."

42 Yeshua said, "Be wanderers."

43 His disciples said to him, "Who are you
that you say these things to us?" "You do
not know who I because of what I say to
you. Rather you have become like the Jews,
who either love the tree but hate its fruit, or
who love the fruit but hate the tree."

44 Yeshua said, "Whoever blasphemes
against the Father will be forgiven, and
whoever blasphemes against the Child will be
forgiven. But whoever blasphemes against
the holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either on
earth or in heaven."

45 Yeshua said, "Grapes are not gathered
from thorn bushes, and figs are not gathered
from thistles, for these plants yield no fruit.
A good person brings forth good from their
storehouse, while a bad person brings forth
evil from the corrupt storehouse in their
hearts, and speaks evil.. For from the
abundance of the heart a person brings forth
evil."

46 Yeshua said, "From the time of Adam to
the time of John the Baptist, among those
born of women, no one is greater than John
the Baptist so that one need not bow their
head before John. However, whoever
becomes like a little child will know the
kingdom, and will be greater than John."

47 Yeshua said, "No one can ride two horses
or bend two bows, and a servant cannot
serve two masters. That servant would
respect one and offend the other. No one
who drinks aged wine then wants to drink
new wine. New wine is not poured into old
wineskins, for the skins may burst, and old
wine is not poured into new wineskins, for
the wine may spoil. An old patch is not sewn
onto a new garment, for it would tear."

48 Yeshua said, "If two people make peace
with each other in a single house, they will
speak to a mountain, 'Move!' and it will
move."

49 Yeshua said, "Blessed are those who are
alone and who are chosen: you will find the
kingdom. For you have come from the
kingdom, and you will return there again."
50 Yeshua said, "If someone says to you,
'Where have you come from?' answer them,
'We have come from the light, where the
light came into being of its own accord,
established itself, and was seen as an image
of light. If they say to you, 'Are you the
light?' reply, 'We are the children of the
light, and we are the chosen ones of the
living One. If they ask you, 'What is the
proof of your God in you?' tell them, 'It is
motion and rest.'"
51 His disciples said to him, "When will the
final rest of the dead occur, and when will
the new world come into being?" He said to
them, 'What you look for has already
appeared, but you do not know it."
52 His disciples said to him, "Twenty-four
prophets have prophesied in Israel, and they
all told of you." He said to them, "You have
not recognized the Living One who is among
you, and have spoken only of the dead."
53 His disciples said to him, "Is it useful to
be circumcised or not?" He said to them, 'If
it was useful children would be born already
circumcised from their birth. However the
spiritual circumcision is true and is useful in
every way."

54 Yeshua said, "Blessed are the poor, for
yours is the kingdom of heaven."

55 Yeshua said, "Whoever does not hate
their father and mother cannot be my
disciple, and whoever does not hate their
brothers and sisters, and carry their cross as
I do, will not be worthy of me."

56 Yeshua said, 'Anyone who has
discovered the world has discovered a
carcass, and anyone who has discovered a
carcass is worth more than the world."

57 Yeshua said, "The kingdom of the Living
One is like someone who has good seed. An
enemy came during the night and sowed
weeds among the good seed. The farmer did
not let the workers uproot the weeds, but
told them, 'I am afraid that when you pull
out the weeds you will pull up the wheat at
the same time.' For at the time of the harvest
the weeds will be easily seen, and will be
pulled up and burned."

58 Yeshua said, "Blessed is anyone who has
suffered for that person has found life."

59 Yeshua said, "Keep your eyes on the
Living One as long as you live, so that you
may not die and then look to see the Living
One but be unable to see."

60 They saw a Samaritan carrying a lamb
and heading to Judea. He said to his
disciples, "Why is he carrying the lamb?"
They said to him, "He will kill it and eat it "
He said to them, "He will not eat it while it is
still alive, but only after it has been killed and
become a carcass." They said, "It is the only
way it can happen." He said to them, "So
also it is with you: seek a place of rest for
yourselves, so that you will not become a
carcass and be eaten."

61 Yeshua said, "Two will be reclining on a
couch: one will die, one will live." Salome
said, "Who are you, for you sat on my couch
and ate from my table as though you were
somebody." Yeshua said to her, "I am have
come from the One who is whole, and I was
given the estate of the Living One." Salome
said, "I am your disciple." Yeshua said,
"That is why I say that the one who is whole
will be filled with light, but one who is
broken will be filled with darkness."

62 Yeshua said, "I reveal my mysteries to
those who are worthy to know my mysteries.
Do not let your left hand know what your
right hand is doing."

63 Yeshua said, "There once was a wealthy
farmer who had much money. The farmer
said, 'I will invest my income and I will sow
and reap, and fill my storehouses with grain.
I will have everything I need.' These were
the farmer's plans, but that very night the
farmer died. Whoever has ears should
listen."

64 Yeshua said, "A certain person was
preparing a party for guests, and when the
meal was ready, the host sent a servant to
those who were invited.. "The servant went
to the first and said, 'My master has invited
you.' "The guest replied, 'Some merchants
owe me money, and they are coming tonight.
I must go to meet them and give them
instructions. Please excuse me.' The servant
went to another guest and said, 'My master
has invited you.' The guest said, 'I have just
purchased a house, and I am busy all day. I
do not have the time.' The servant went to
another guest and said, 'My master has
invited you.' The guest replied, 'My friend
is getting married, and I am responsible for
dinner, so I cannot come. Please excuse me.'
The servant went to still another guest and
said, 'My master has invited you.' The guest
said, 'I have just purchased a farm, and I
must collect the rent, so I cannot come.
Please excuse me.' The servant returned and
said to the master, 'Those whom you have
invited to the banquet have asked to be
excused.' The master replied to the servant,
'Go out into the streets, and bring back
whomever you find to my banquet. Business
people and merchants will not enter the
realm of the Living One."

65 He said, "Once there was a good person
who was the keeper of a vineyard. The
vineyard was rented to some farmers, so
that the farmers could work on it and the
owner could collect the rent from them. The
owner sent a servant, so that the farmers
might pay the rent from the vineyard, but
instead they fell upon and beat, and almost
killed the servant. The servant returned and
told the master. The master said, 'Perhaps
the servant did not know the tenants.' The
owner sent another servant, and the farmers
beat that servant as well. Then the master
sent his child and said, 'Perhaps they will
respect my child.' However, because the
farmers knew that the child the one who
would inherit the vineyard, they fell upon
the child and the child was killed. Whoever
has ears should listen."

66 Yeshua said, "Show me the stone the
builders rejected for that is the cornerstone."

The Canonical Gospels

Mark 6:4 And Jesus said to them, "A
prophet is not without honor, except in his
own country, and among his own kin, and in
his own house."
Luke 4:23 And he said to them, "Doubtless
you will quote to me this proverb,
'Physician, heal yourself; what we have
heard you did at Capernaum, do here also in
your own country.'"
Luke 4:24 And he said, "Truly, I say to you,
no prophet is acceptable in his own country.
John 4:44 For Jesus himself testified that a
prophet has no honor in his own country.

Matthew 5:14 "You are the light of the
world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.

Matthew 10:27 What I tell you in the dark,
utter in the light; and what you hear
whispered, proclaim upon the housetops.
Matthew 5:15 Nor do men light a lamp and
put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it
gives light to all in the house.
Mark 4:21 And he said to them, "Is a lamp
brought in to be put under a bushel, or under
a bed, and not on a stand?
Luke 8:16 "No one after lighting a lamp
covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed,
but puts it on a stand, that those who enter
may see the light.
Luke 11:33 "No one after lighting a lamp
puts it in a cellar or under a bushel, but on a
stand, that those who enter may see the light.

Matthew 15:14 Let them alone; they are
blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind
man, both will fall into a pit."
Luke 6:39 He also told them a parable: "Can
a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not
both fall into a pit?

Matthew 12:29 Or how can one enter a
strong person's house and plunder the
goods, unless first they bind the strong?
Then indeed they may plunder the house.
Mark 3:27 But no one can enter a strong
person's house and plunder the goods, unless
they first binds the strong; then indeed they
may plunder the house.
Luke 11:21 When a strong person, fully
armed, guards a palace, the goods are in
peace;
Luke 11:22 but when anyone stronger
assails and overcomes the strong, they take
away the armor in which the strong trusted,
and divide the spoil.

Matthew 6:25 Therefore I tell you, do not be
anxious about your life, what you shall eat or
what you shall drink, nor about your body,
what you shall put on. Is not life more than
food, and the body more than clothing?
Luke 12:22 And he said to his disciples,
"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious
about your life, what you shall eat, nor about
your body, what you shall put on.
23 For life is more than food, and the body
more than clothing.

Luke 11:52 Woe to you lawyers! for you
have taken away the key of knowledge; you
did not enter yourselves, and you hindered
those who were entering.
Matthew 10:16 Behold, I send you out as
sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as
serpents and innocent as doves.

Matthew 15:13 He answered, "Every plant
which my heavenly Father has not planted
will be rooted up.

Matthew 25:29 For to every one who has
will more be given, and they will have
abundance; but from those who have not,
even what they have will be taken away.
Luke 19:26 'I tell you, that to every one
who has will more be given; but from the one
who has not, even what they have will be
taken away.

John 8:25 They said to him, "Who are you?"
Jesus said to them, "Even what I have told
you from the beginning.
Matthew 7:16 You will know them by their
fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or
figs from thistles?
Matthew 7:17 So, every sound tree bears
good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit.
Matthew 7:18 A sound tree cannot bear evil
fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
Matthew 7:19 Every tree that does not bear
good fruit is cut down and thrown into the
fire.
Matthew 7:20 Thus you will know them by
their fruits.
Luke 6:43 "For no good tree bears bad fruit,
nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit;
Luke 6:44 for each tree is known by its own
fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns,
nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
Luke 6:45 The good man out of the good
treasure of his heart produces good, and the
evil man out of his evil treasure produces
evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his
mouth speaks.
Luke 6:46 "Why do you call me 'Lord,
Lord,' and not do what I tell you?

Matthew 12:32 And whoever says a word
against the Child of Humanity will be
forgiven; but whoever speaks against the
Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this
age or in the age to come.
Mark 3:28 Truly, I say to you, all sins will
be forgiven the children of humanity, and
whatever blasphemies they utter;
Mark 3:29 but whoever blasphemes against
the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is
guilty of an eternal sin.
Luke 12:10 And every one who speaks a
word against the Son of man will be
forgiven; but he who blasphemes against the
Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

Matthew 7:16 You will know them by their
fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or
figs from thistles?
Matthew 7:17 So, every sound tree bears
good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit.
Matthew 7:18 A sound tree cannot bear evil
fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
Luke 6:43 "For no good tree bears bad fruit,
nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit;

Matthew 11:11 Truly, I say to you, among
those born of women there has risen no one
greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is
least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than
he.
Luke 7:28 I tell you, among those born of
women none is greater than John; yet he who
is least in the kingdom of God is greater than
he."

Matthew 9:17 Neither is new wine put into
old wineskins; if it is, the skins burst, and the
wine is spilled, and the skins are destroyed;
but new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and
so both are preserved."
Mark 2:22 And no one puts new wine into
old wineskins; if he does, the wine will burst
the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the
skins; but new wine is for fresh skins."
Luke 5:37 And no one puts new wine into
old wineskins; if he does, the new wine will
burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the
skins will be destroyed.
Luke 5:38 But new wine must be put into
fresh wineskins.
Matthew 9:16 And no one puts a piece of
unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the
patch tears away from the garment, and a
worse tear is made.
Mark 2:21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk
cloth on an old garment; if he does, the patch
tears away from it, the new from the old, and
a worse tear is made.

Matthew 18:19 Again I say to you, if two of
you agree on earth about anything they ask,
it will be done for them by my Father in
heaven.
Mark 11:23 Truly, I say to you, whoever
says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast
into the sea,' and does not doubt in their
heart, but believe that what they say will
come to pass, it will be done for them.
Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever
you ask in prayer, believe that you have
received it, and it will be yours.

Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Luke 6:20 And he lifted up his eyes on his
disciples, and said: "Blessed are you poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God."

Luke 14:26 "If any one comes to me and
does not hate their own father and mother
and wife and children and brothers and
sisters, yes, and even their own life, they
cannot be my disciple.
Matthew 10:37 The one who loves father or
mother more than me is not worthy of me;
and the one who loves son or daughter more
than me is not worthy of me;
Matthew 10:38 and the one who does not
take the cross and follow me is not worthy of
me.

Matthew 13:24 Another parable he put
before them, saying, "The kingdom of
heaven may be compared to a man who
sowed good seed in his field;
Matthew 13:25 but while men were
sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds
among the wheat, and went away.
Matthew 13:26 So when the plants came up
and bore grain, then the weeds appeared
also.
Matthew 13:27 And the servants of the
householder came and said to him, 'Sir, did
you not sow good seed in your field? How
then has it weeds?'
Matthew 13:28 He said to them, 'An enemy
has done this.' The servants said to him,
'Then do you want us to go and gather
them?'
Matthew 13:29 But he said, 'No; lest in
gathering the weeds you root up the wheat
along with them.
Matthew 13:30 Let both grow together until
the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the
reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind
them in bundles to be burned, but gather the
wheat into my barn.'"

John 7:34 You will seek me and you will not
find me; where I am you cannot come.
John 13:33 Little children, yet a little while I
am with you. You will seek me; and as I said
to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I
am going you cannot come.'

Matthew 13:11 And he answered them, "To
you it has been given to know the secrets of
the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has
not been given."
Mark 4:11 And he said to them, "To you
has been given the secret of the kingdom of
God, but for those outside everything is in
parables."
Luke 8:10 he said, "To you it has been given
to know the secrets of the kingdom of God;
but for others they are in parables, so that
seeing they may not see, and hearing they
may not understand."
Matthew 6:3 But when you give alms, do
not let your left hand know what your right
hand is doing,

Luke 12:16 And he told them a parable,
saying, "The land of a rich man brought forth
plentifully;
Luke 12:17 and he thought to himself,
'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store
my crops?'
Luke 12:18 And he said, 'I will do this: I
will pull down my barns, and build larger
ones; and there I will store all my grain and
my goods.
Luke 12:19 And I will say to my soul, Soul,
you have ample goods laid up for many
years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.'
Luke 12:20 But God said to him, 'Fool!
This night your soul is required of you; and
the things you have prepared, whose will
they be?'
Luke 12:21 So is he who lays up treasure
for himself, and is not rich toward God."

Matthew 22:2 "The kingdom of heaven may
be compared to a king who gave a marriage
feast for his son,
Matthew 22:3 and sent his servants to call
those who were invited to the marriage feast;
but they would not come.
Matthew 22:4 Again he sent other servants,
saying, 'Tell those who are invited, Behold, I
have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my
fat calves are killed, and everything is ready;
come to the marriage feast.'
Matthew 22:5 But they made light of it and
went off, one to his farm, another to his
business,
Matthew 22:6 while the rest seized his
servants, treated them shamefully, and killed
them.
Matthew 22:7 The king was angry, and he
sent his troops and destroyed those
murderers and burned their city.
Matthew 22:8 Then he said to his servants,
'The wedding is ready, but those invited
were not worthy.
Matthew 22:9 Go therefore to the
thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage
feast as many as you find.'
Matthew 22:10 And those servants went out
into the streets and gathered all whom they
found, both bad and good; so the wedding
hall was filled with guests.
Luke 14:16 But he said to him, "A man
once gave a great banquet, and invited many;
Luke 14:17 and at the time for the banquet
he sent his servant to say to those who had
been invited, 'Come; for all is now ready.'
Luke 14:18 But they all alike began to make
excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought
a field, and I must go out and see it; I pray
you, have me excused.'
Luke 14:19 And another said, 'I have
bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to
examine them; I pray you, have me excused.'
Luke 14:20 And another said, 'I have
married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.'
Luke 14:21 So the servant came and
reported this to his master. Then the
householder in anger said to his servant, 'Go
out quickly to the streets and lanes of the
city, and bring in the poor and maimed and
blind and lame.'
Luke 14:22 And the servant said, 'Sir, what
you commanded has been done, and still
there is room.'
Luke 14:23 And the master said to the
servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedges,
and compel people to come in, that my house
may be filled.
Luke 14:24 For I tell you, none of those
men who were invited shall taste my
banquet.'"

Matthew 21:33 Hear another parable. There
was a householder who planted a vineyard,
and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine
press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to
tenants, and went into another country.
Matthew 21:34 When the season of fruit
drew near, he sent his servants to the
tenants, to get his fruit;
Matthew 21:35 and the tenants took his
servants and beat one, killed another, and
stoned another.
Matthew 21:36 Again he sent other
servants, more than the first; and they did the
same to them.
Matthew 21:37 Afterward he sent his son to
them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
Matthew 21:38 But when the tenants saw
the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the
heir; come, let us kill him and have his
inheritance.'
Matthew 21:39 And they took him and cast
him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
Mark 12:1 And he began to speak to them in
parables. "A man planted a vineyard, and set
a hedge around it, and dug a pit for the wine
press, and built a tower, and let it out to
tenants, and went into another country.
Mark 12:2 When the time came, he sent a
servant to the tenants, to get from them
some of the fruit of the vineyard.
Mark 12:3 And they took him and beat him,
and sent him away empty-handed.
Mark 12:4 Again he sent to them another
servant, and they wounded him in the head,
and treated him shamefully.
Mark 12:5 And he sent another, and him
they killed; and so with many others, some
they beat and some they killed.
Mark 12:6 He had still one other, a beloved
son; finally he sent him to them, saying,
'They will respect my son.'
Mark 12:7 But those tenants said to one
another, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill
him, and the inheritance will be ours.'
Mark 12:8 And they took him and killed
him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
Luke 20:9 And he began to tell the people
this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, and
let it out to tenants, and went into another
country for a long while.
Luke 20:10 When the time came, he sent a
servant to the tenants, that they should give
him some of the fruit of the vineyard; but the
tenants beat him, and sent him away
empty-handed.
Luke 20:11 And he sent another servant;
him also they beat and treated shamefully,
and sent him away empty-handed.
Luke 20:12 And he sent yet a third; this one
they wounded and cast out.
Luke 20:13 Then the owner of the vineyard
said, 'What shall I do? I will send my
beloved son; it may be they will respect him.'
Luke 20:14 But when the tenants saw him,
they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; let
us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'
Luke 20:15 And they cast him out of the
vineyard and killed him. What then will the
owner of the vineyard do to them?

Matthew 21:42 Jesus said to them, "Have
you never read in the scriptures: 'The very
stone which the builders rejected has become
the head of the corner; this was the Lord's
doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?
Mark 12:10 Have you not read this
scripture: 'The very stone which the builders
rejected has become the head of the corner;
Luke 20:17 But he looked at them and said,
"What then is this that is written: 'The very
stone which the builders rejected has become
the head of the corner'?
