Rivers in the desert?

The pictures below show typical activity storm activity over Eden, for the period at the end of May, 2002 in the collage below. (The images below are 'cloud height' computer generated graphics ... on another page I have archived actual satellite photos of clouds over the desert for the month of May, 2002.) These images are typical of much of the recent activity, which I have been tracking on the Eden Watch pages. The topographical map below shows the geography of the Western half of the Sahara

What these images show is a concentration of rain recently in the Western Plains as well as in the Mountain Ranges of the desert in the West. (There is also a ridge of mountains in the North of the desert in the Eastern half, stretching from Libya to the Egypt with another broad plain in the south of the desert below these moutains, stretching to an even higher mountain range along the western border of Sudan and and then an even higher mountain range in Ethiopia). The greenish areas in the map show lowlands or basins, where one would expect water to collect and the lowest areas, to form bodies of water over time. Plains also exist in the east, for example below the mountains in Chad is another plain also bordered by mountains in the east. However the rain has been concentrated in the Western plains and the Western mountains in recent weeks.)

What this pattern of rain in recent weeks suggests is that given enough time, streams should begin to flow in the desert (if they haven't already) and then rivers should begin to reappear in old river beds, which still exist in 'fossilized' form on the desert (rivers and streams have their source in the mountains.) I noticed an unusual temperature inversion on the desert earlier this year. Rather than being hot the desert was cooler than one would normally expect, which suggests that possibility that a snow pack developed on the moutaintops, which then suggests the possibility of streams forming and given an accumulating snow pack, then rivers. One would also expect savannahs to return to the western plains area given the high concentration of activity over this particular area, and given that these regions have been barren and desolate, the return of savannahs suggest the return of people and the return of people suggests the emergence of an agricultural plain in this Western part of the desert.

Sarah McLachlan's Eden Song

Mother teach me to walk again
Milk and Honey so intoxicating

Into the fire
I'm reunited
into the fire
I am the spark
Into the fire
I yearn for comfort

Open the doors that lead on into Eden
No more cheap disguise
Follow the signs marked back to the beginning
No more compromise
Feel the water that carries me to the sea
You I see as my security
I will stare into the sun until its light doesn't blind me
I will walk into the fire until its heat doesn't burn me
And I will feed the fire

Sarah's song 'Witness'

Make me a witness
Lift me up
Out of darkness
out of doubt
Will we burn in heaven
Like we do down here?
Will a change come, while we're waiting?
Everyone is waiting...
And when we're done soul searching
And we carry the weight
And die for a cause
Is misery made beautiful
right before our eyes?
Will mercy be revealed
or blind us where we stand?
Will we burn in heaven
Like we do down here?
Will a change come while we're waiting?
Everyone is waiting.

Psalm 107:32 : YAHWEH turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. And there the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; they sow fields, and plant vineyards, and get a fruitful yield. Under blessing they multiply greatly.

"The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of YAHWEH, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God and will come and save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not pass over it, and fools shall not err therein. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of YAHWEH shall return, and come to Eden with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away."(Isaiah chapter 35 verse 1)

"A voice cries out, 'Prepare a path through the wilderness for YAHWEH, prepare a highway across the desert for our God. Let every valley be raised, every mountain and hill be brought low, uneven ground made smooth, and steep places become a level plain. Then the Glory of YAHWEH will be revealed and all humanity will see it ... Climb to a high mountaintop, you who bring good news to Eden. Raise your voice and shout aloud, and say, 'Your God is near.' Here comes YAHWEH God, coming with power, coming to rule with powerful arm. Recompense comes before and God's reward is there as well. Like a shepherd YAHWEH will tend to the flock, gently rocking the lambs and leading the mother ewes to water." (Isaiah chapter 40 verse 3)

Psalm 68

O God, when thou didst go forth before thy people, when thou didst march through the wilderness, Selah
the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain, at the presence of God; yon Sinai quaked at the presence of God.
Rain in abundance, O God, thou didst shed abroad; thou didst restore thy heritage as it languished;

"I will open rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive; I will set in the desert the cypress, the plane and the pine together; that people may see and know, may consider and understand together, that the hand of YAHWEH has done this, God has created it." (Isaiah chapter 41 verse 18)

I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild beasts will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert." (Isaiah chapter 43 verse 18)

"Shower, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness; let the earth open, that salvation may sprout forth, and let it cause righteousness to spring up also; I Yahweh have created it." (Isaiah chapter 45)

"For YAHWEH will comfort Eden; will comfort all her waste places, and will make her wilderness like the Garden of Eden, her desert like the garden of YAHWEH; joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song.." (Isaiah chapter 51 verse 3)
