Garden of Eden
vegetation comparison
photos on the Sahara

The first set of photos shows, on the left, the vegetation line on the Sahara after the finish of the rainy season on the Sahel grasslands the separate the desert from the rain forest. Vegetation shows up as dark areas on the visible sattellite imagery. On the right hand side shows the Sahara and the Sahel as it was on July 14th, 2001, about halfway through the rainy season. The first thing you might notice is how well the Sahel is doing this Spring (and last year was considered to be an exceptionally rainy season on the Sahel according the United Nations Food and Agriculture Report on the Sahel). Normally the rainy season starts out slow, crawls northward to the deserts edge throughout the summer and fall, and then slips back again until it comes to an end in November. If you follow the links to the photos on my various Eden watch pages starting at the beginning of May and onwards, you will notice that it has been very active this year, and not just on the Sahel, but on the Sahara as well. (Visit my 'Eden Eagle Wing' if you want links to more information on the first of a series of prophecies already fulfilled in this region of the world...).

Eden doesn't grow in a day, so I will be updating my vegetation watch perhaps once a month. However, even at this early stage you can see changes taking place. The two images do not exactly match in contrast but even so you can notice certain areas of bleached sand shrinking, and there is an interesting section in the center of the desert that is definately growing vegetation, and should be quite dark in the months ahead. Notice how the grasslands have creeped northward around the area near the lake on the right hand side of the photo, and the area of bleach sand has decreased in size. There are also some interesting areas on the left hand side of the photo. If you check out the photos posted on pages linked from the Eden Index you can see that these areas of darkening correspond to the areas in which the rains have fallen (so far the activity has been concentrated on the western Sahara, with the central Sahara particularly affected (consequently the noticeable darkening taking place in the center of the images.
