This logical interuption of the narrative caused Spinoza to judge that the manuscript had been promiscuously edited and tossed into a heap. However the most likely explanation is that the story of both Joseph and the separate source of the story of Judah had been submerged in overall chiastic editing structure which governed the editing of sources (even sources as diametrically opposed as some of those which compose the Bible - see Jeremiah as an example).
